Has this happened to anyone?

You create an exclude, carefully name it, verify where it will be saved, and save it --- only to discover it is not where it should be. You then do a search and it comes up with a SHORTCUT to the file, but not the file. The properties of the shortcut say the file is exactly where you saved it; where it should be. You look again, but the file ain’t there.

Exactly the same thing has happened today with an AFCAD and another BGL.

I hasten to add that all this is happening just today; I’ve been doing excludes & AFCADS for over a year without any problem.

It is almost like FS9 is locked up and won’t accept any such changes! (And yes, I restart the Sim before I look for the changes!)

Has anyone had this situation? Any ideas on how to defeat it?

Well, here's a wild-assed guess...

Could it be that somehow the new files have been created as hidden files, and your settings aren't set to show hidden files?

I can't imagine how that could happen, but I can't think of any other way there could be a shortcut to a file that apparently doesn't exist.

What happens when you click on the shortcut?

Set your folder properties to show hidden files and see if your mystery files become visible.

Hey, Mick -- thanks for your response.

1. My files are set to Show Hidden for all except System files
2. When I click on the shortcut, Windows searches...and searches. Eventually it tells me the it cannot find the file to which the shortcut refers. LOL

I stayed away from excludes and such for a day; and then a little while ago I re-did the exclude that had previously vanished, this time w/ a slightly diff. name. No problem; it appeared where it was told to appear and it works fine.

I did nothing different from Sunday, other than add a "_2" to the save as name. I have NO IDEA what has possessed my rig. My son says machines have a mind of their own; hard to argue with that.

Have you made any changes to your ant-virus lately? After a major anti-virus upgrade on my rig, I had this same issue with another program that would not allow me to "save", only to "save as" with a different file name while the anti-virus was running. Just a thought.

Hey, Cthulhu --

My sim PC is a stand-alone rig that does NOT connect to the Internet. I do have Avast on it (not sure why I installed it!) but it does not update since the install (a year ago?). But you gave me an idea...I'll de-activate Avast and try another exclude, altho' as I mentioned to Mick everything is working now!

Do you turn the rig off occasionally?? Mine was suddenly doing all kinds of weird things visually, and my three copies of FS9 (GW3, Silverwings, and 1980's) wouldn't start beyond the make a flight panels. The default FS9 worked fine, but after flying for 10-15 minutes, the scenery would start tearing and folding over on itself. It was also doing this with FSX. Airports were moving all over the place, too.

Finally, I just shut the rig down for the night. (It had been left on for almost two weeks.) Turned it back on after getting home from work, and everything working normal again. Just a thought.

Hey Modelr -- I use my Sim rig on average 2x a week, for perhaps 6-8 hrs at a time. Otherwise it is OFF. Just a couple of hours ago I let it idle (w/ FS9 running) for maybe 40 mins. When I returned, I had to reload the a/c I had been using SEVERAL times before a/c controls worked.

I opened this thread on Sunday by reporting that I had made several BGLs that simply disappeared from my rig. I shut it down and went to sleep. On Monday I fired it up for a few hours to install some scenery, but did not mess with making XMLs or BGLs. Earlier today I fired it up again and created one of the excludes that had disappeared on Sunday; today it did NOT disappear! So it seemed that the gremlin had departed my rig. :kilroy:

Well.... just before letting it idle (as explained in the first paragraph) I created another BGL... which promptly disappeared as on Sunday. Seems like "it" is back! :banghead:

I'm torn between getting to the bottom of this -- which is taking lottsa time I could use elsewhere -- and simply telling it to go p--- up a rope. :angryfir:
