Have I missed a setting?

Or something?

I seem to recall reading there would be 200+ a/c airborne at any one time in the campaign. Well I've just been flying around for about an hour in perfect visibility over the lines, back and forward, around and around, I saw not one allied or axis plane other than those of my two wingmen. I could see the balloons though, miles and miles away, and I have no problem seeing my wingmen when they go flying off miles away too.

Where's the war at?

Go to workshops and set Regional Air activity to med or heavy - yes it still maintains balance and lulls in the air war are still respected and if historically there was little action then there will still be little action - so don't select a squad in Alsace...try Flanders/Somme 1918 on heavy....

If you want even more I can set you up to have a 1000 craft in the air or more with ease - with a simple text change in an INI file - yes in your build 1.1 - but then you will sue me for FPS issues.

Also every single major battle at the front is modeled - again a bit of historical knowledge / reading on your part and you should be able to enlist in a squad near a battle.... try it and see?

Ah, I must be in a post-blizzard lull then. :icon_lol:

I die-rolled for era and squad, it was the only immersive thing to do. The regional setting is already on max, and I'm posted next door to Albert in january 1917.

I wasn't aware they had days off in good weather. I'll just plug on then. :)

That ini-file mod, could you PM me instructions please? I might be upgrading my system so it would probably come in very useful.

Is there also a file that can be altered to reduce the accuracy of the two-seater MGs? As a compensation for their ability to fire through the floor-boards. As they have more than twice as much arc as they should I don't think it would be unrealistic to reduce their accuracy by half. One should end up with about the same amount of bullets in ones plane as one would with 100% accuracy and realistic arc.

If its January and you are in a quiet part of the front then of course there isn't going to be much air activity. Seems very realistic to me....something to be complimented, not something to complain about.

I would be curious to know more about the 'max planes' setting too, although I realize that Winder has more pressing things to attend to. I assume the manager doesn't put the max allotment of planes in the air every mission just because it can.

I am wondering, how often is 256 actually 'not enough available planes'? I would like to give OFF the freedom to put all the planes in the air that it needs to for proper rereation of the air war, if my computer can handle it.

I enjoy the fact that every time I go out on a mission in campaign, I don't get "engaged" in combat.
Didn't happen in WW1. Does in "game type" simulations..or in QC if that's what you are after at the moment. Personally, I like the fact that I don't know what I am going to encounter in a campaign mission..quiet flight.."miissed opportunities"..fight..whatever. Makes things interesting for me anyway:ernae:

I agree, but after ten missions without a single hun seen one starts to worry something might be amiss.

Maybe just better to choose another squad/time? We do not yet have every single craft flown, or every single squadrom in the game yet either.
Some squads should for example be flying a parasol.. but they won't because it's not in the game yet.

Are you sure you are not flying in 1919? :ernae:
Turn the labels on from time to time to "see" what's going on around you..it helps in this area.

I disabled labels and all that other jazz so I wouldn't be tempted. Once done the purity is spoiled. :icon_lol:

I'll tough it out. So long as the game isn't busted something will come along eventually. :)

Ten hours flying, real time, I am patience personified.

Turn on the labels and you will see a sky full of planes. it is the same argument you are using for MGs on two seaters. it is more realistic as it gives you situational awareness that a computer monitor can not give you.

I did not see any planes either until I turned on lables and noticed a whole war aorund me :)

Pol how about his questions on two seater Mgs? I agree with him 100%.

I think Royce mentions labels as a test, you will be surprised how many at alt you would miss etc. As in real life, clouds, just out of range, lighting, I flew missions never saw a thing, put "radar" and labels on flew again and wow there they were I was blind. Worth a check.

2 seaters been done to death in the other thread,
http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/showthread.php?t=10266
See Shredwards answer.

They are reasonably balanced at the moment. You cannot fly straight and have a cushy kill behind 2 seaters, especially in formation were quite deadly. Even I can aim and fire down and to the side of the tail easy, and again in RL a decent pilot would yaw or roll a little or move to allow the gunner to rip you.

Arcs are accurate where info is available (e.g. Biff had 360 and a good up/down range as they could move the mounting physically up down on notches to allow the gunner to "get over" the view down). In OFF we slightly limited some already. You have to edit every XDP and then it won't work anymore in OFF unfortunately

just curious to know if there's gonna be more squadrons and planes added in the future?

In my experience, that area of the front is pretty well dead in that time period. But wait a couple months and it picks up as both sides assemble stuff to support/stop the Arras offensive, leading to Bloody April.

It helps to know your WW1 land history.

All through 1916, there's Verdun going on. From late June to the end of 1916, there's the Somme. In the spring of 1917, you've got Arras-Nivelle and Passchendaele in the fall. In 1918, the Germans attack at various times all along the line in the 1st half, then there's numerous Entente offensives in the latter part of the year. September on the Meuse-Argonne front is very busy.

Oh, ya missed a post by Winder in another thread I see. There will be more planes added after 1.3...and free to boot ...fantastic, hey! These guys are so dedicated and amazing. I'm so pleased to support the cause...$$$ well spent indeed!
:applause::applause::applause:

I'm guessing many others missed it too, as it surely would have garnered more attention if it was not.

...now if everybody that buys the game can convince 5 others to buy it too, I think that is a pretty good way to say thank you as well! I'm working on this...

excellent new indeed:applause: hopefully with the continued development of OFF this will mean more sales. maybe even an updated 3d engine eh, one can only dream.

this is the 1st ww1 flight sim ive played since playin a game called wings on the old amiga many years ago. it brings back many happy memories.

I finally spotted some other planes in my last mission, but all British. And they were at a hell of a distance, I could only just make out the red bit on the tail at max mag on my binoculars and enough of the shape to recognize the type (Be2).

I was at 11000ft again, and the review showed me there were Halbs getting knocked down beneath me at 3000ft and 4000ft.

So, I don't think I need the labels and radar and stuff, the game is doing everything well enough. I just need to be at the right altitude and in the right place at the right time, per reality. Deferred gratification, when I finally get my teeth into something it's going to be all the sweeter. :)

Oh yes, I'm trying to talk my brother into getting a copy of this and CFS3. He's been blatting about in IL2 while I've been playing this (we're on Skype) and he's bored with it. Well, there's no comparison really...the heart & soul of a dynamic campaign vs the sterility of IL2. And OFF looks better too.

Siggi- As Pol reiterated, I suggested Labels as a "test".
I had the exact same thoughts as you, since I don't like labels on, or TAC screen, etc. However when I checked the skies with the Labels on..well there was everything as it should be. So I know there is nothing "wrong" with the sim, and I went back to flying as I like and trying to keep my SA and "eyes peeled".

@Siggi,

as far as I know, by now, 11000ft is a damn high altitude for WW I crafts. When I´m on patrol, I decide to climb to around 5000 ft, and flying "labels on". I put the "Tac" om a button and check my course frequently, cause the map is a no go, in case of possible crashes, and the Nuieport 11 has no instruments.
There is a hell of activity, E III`s and Rolands so far, but I was not able to down any of them.

Tally ho!
