Help please - terrible performance with upgraded system

Hi all

I'm hoping you can help. I'm getting terrible performance in FSX since I replaced my 8600GTS with a GTX 260 video card.

Before, my 8600GTS (512mb) and E6750 (not overclocked) gave me good frames (15-25+) and smooth performance (the lower frames were still smooth) with pretty high settings and frame rate "unlimited" - this always worked best for me.

However, once I tried FSX with the GTX 260 card (191.07 drivers), performance with the same settings became awful. Frames varying wildly between 0.8 and 48 (often with the widest variations alongside each other), associated terrible jerky flight and spiking of the scenery at times. This didn't get better even after panning the view. Unplayable.

I have overclocked my E6750 to 3.2Ghz and it's no better. No better with VSync on or off, or with a target framerate set.

I have followed Nick N's tweak guide for FSX and Nhancer to no avail, even tinkering with the .cfg file - adding a Bufferpools line with the recommended 700 (and even with zero - no appreciable difference).

The strange thing is all my other games and sims work great with this hardware - including Rise of Flight, ARMA2, Free Falcon 5 etc - it's only FSX that is falling in a heap.

I'm out of ideas and looking for some advice please.

cheers

Well that just bites...

Do this.....

Uninstall your vid drivers...

Uninstall NHancer too

In safe mode run a driver cleaner.

Bootback into windows..

Install the driver again...

Now delete your FSX config....

Reboot

Use no tweaks...Not even N hancer

Set FSX up and Nvidia up like it shows here.. http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/showthread.php?t=3023

Fly and test..Lock your frames no higher than 35 too...

Then get back and we cane tune..

Oh yea...Do just one Config rewrite before you test..

Set TBM to 10 NOT default 40 (texture bandwidth Mulitplier)

Before you do what Harleyman suggested...what OS do you use? XP, Vista or 7?

I assume your system is stable after the overclock?
If you want, you can test it with OCCT.

Let the test run. If it passes, your system is rock solid, if it lasts for 15 minutes it's stable for everyday use.

Also, get newer drivers. The 191.07s are a bit out of date.

Hi all

I'm on Vista 32 and the system is stable after the o/c. The GTX 260 has been great in all other games/sims.

I'll update drivers and report back.

Thanks for the help.

Well, interestingly, after trying new drivers and all sorts of tweaks (removing Bufferpools entry in .cfg removed spiking, but put framerates at 5), I clicked the DX10 preview button and I'm getting 35-40fps on unlimited and smooth as silk!

Good news, does that mean that you can't use any FS9 aircraft now ? That would be a pain for me as I have alot of FS9 AI in there.

I think it does - they will have texture problems i believe, though I'm only just getting to grips with what using DX10 means. I don't have many FS9 aircraft in my install, expect for a few old gliders, most of which won't work with DX10 according to the website.

I will have to trot out my stable and see what I need to delete...

Thanks Dangerous - I'll try that version (though I think I'm up to date and not experiencing issues with any other program).
