SOH-CM-2014
FS just started crashing on start up. I was editing some saved flights names in windows explorer and blooey! Was it something I did there? System restore didn't work. I also noticed, isn't there supposed to be a Default Flight in the FS files list? It's not there now. Think I'll go sulk a bit.

I think I was using Previous Flight and accidentally altered the name of that flight when the game was off. Would that create a F'd up loop?

Yes, altering the the previous flight name will throw a wrench in the gears. No problem though, just toss that "Previous flight.FLT" (or whatever you renamed it) into the trash. Leave the "Previous flight.WX" intact. Restart flightsim, it will choke and sputter a bit and then popup a notification that it can't find the flight/aircraft, but will try to restart with the default flight. Give it the okay if asked.
FS will rebuild a new Previous flight.FLT file after the default load.
(I don't know, but you could try just renaming it back to "Previous flight.FLT" and see if that works first)

BTW, the default flight is located in "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9\Flights\other".
The previous flight is in "...\My Documents\Flight Simulator Files".

Hope that helps you out.

Nope. I start it with task manager up and it shows not responding about 5 seconds after the start screen comes up. I got rid of the Previous Flight (keeping the WX), got rid of the entire group of ones I was editing,and copied the Default files to the FS files folder. No go.
I had that Default start up process work before but not this time.I would have thought system restore would have worked. I'll try that one more time but it looks like a re-install is in my future. Oh well...

You can fix it by the changing the flight's name in your fs9.cfg file to one you do have.

[USERINTERFACE]

.
SITUATION=C:\Documents and Settings\your name\My Documents\Flight Simulator Files\Beech D-18 at KTGC

I've shot myself in the foot several times doing that.

Yeah I just tried that with a few names but still no joy. The cfg has other details in that section like flight title and page ID. I seem to have lost my default cfg. Does this one match someones default by comparing? I still think I should be able to get it to load with a default cfg file. This is what I have now...

[USERINTERFACE]
MAP_ORIENTATION=2
PAUSE_ON_LOST_FOCUS=1
PROMPT_ON_EXIT=0
SelectFlightLevel=0
SelectFlightTitle=0
PageID=3
OpenATCOnCreate=0
SITUATION=C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\Flight Simulator Files\Default Flight
FSLiveURL=www.microsoft.com/games/flightsimulator/product/fsliveweb.asp
DisplayFuelAsWeight=1

Change the line to simply read SITUATION= and it will go back to your box-stock default flight of the C172 at KSEA. Then you can choose another default flight from inside the Sim.

This is normal. Task manager usually shows a "not responding" message when the program is "thinking" or having to do internal changes, as is very common in FS. It also happens during internal searches.

Follow the other instructions given by others here.

I see said the blind man. I'm glad I mentioned the task manager cause typing in default flight worked and probably has been a few tries before but I didn't know it. Thanks modelr and everybody else I'm back up and running. You guys are great!:applause:
