What an unbelievably talented family. Rembrandt Bugatti, Ettore's younger brother, sculpters of animals are sought after and highly prized too. What a pity he took his own life in 1916 but then the whole world must have seemed mad then, especially in Europe.

Yep. Rembrandt was amazing.. He did the Elephant sculpture that is on the radiator caps of the huge Roayale automobiles, the elephant standing up on one foot, snout pointing upwards.


Did you know that Ettore made his first car at the age of about 19? He assembled it first in his families basement. He would go to the local foundary to have castings made. He even created his own gearbox, if you can beleive that. Later, he disassembled it and reassembled it outside.

The car had rave reviews at a car salon (expo/show) and later a car company asked his dad if he could work for them.


Incredible, making all his own parts, this was back in an era when engines were pretty much experimental. ....and.. No internet, no schools for engine and gear box design, probably only a hand full of books in the entire world on making cars..... And here is this young boy making a car himself.. lol.. Genius!

£2,989,495. was the actual sale price, less than half of the 'expected' amount.
Sign of the times I suppose, roughly 6 months ago an absolutely delectable Ferrari 250GT SWB 'California Spyder' went for (IIRC) over £4,000,000.
I hope this one ended up in the tight hands and not in the ownership of someone who will lock it away for who knows how long.
Much as I admire the workmanship and design of the maque, it still amazes me that Ettore Bugatti never moved beyond beam axles and cable brakes .... let alone copying the Miller twin cam cylinder head.

Some good points Wombat!

I remember when Ferraris were being bought up by the Japanese many years ago. I also remember seeing a Type 35C Compresseure GP going for 3.5M at the Barret Jackson auction, (a friend of mine did the restoration on it). I never dreamed a car would could go for 3.5 at the time. I think it was the next year that 'Dominos Pizza' mogul purchased or sold his Royale for almost 10M. Crazy...


Who ever did the restoration on that black Atlantique 57SC for the cologne and clothing designer mogul did a brilliant job. Every single part restored, and meticulously put back together. One awesome little car.



Miller was quite a pioneer on those straight eights, wasnt he! Love that disc supercharger at the end of the engine. Some cool casting designs. I can only think Bugatti really admired Millers work.

Superb work indeed.
It helps that the owner likes his cars to be true restorations, I was suprised (and very pleased!) to see his Ferrari 375+ at Pebble Beach several years ago wearing silver painted wheels instead of the usual non-authentic chrome plated ones!
The other side of the coin is the Leno approach ........ he's ruined more cars than anyone I can think of, his T57 with everything possible 'chromed' and an ultra high gloss two-pack paint job is just plain ugly.
