How a free tow can cost you $400 and up

Just makes your blood boil when you here about people being taken advantage of like this. :a1451:

“We charge $125 to hook up the car and $5 per mile,” Alfonso said. “A 10-mile tow can cost $200. It gets expensive. Customers don’t realize that.”

That is some fuzzy math right there...

$5 per mile x 10 miles = $50 + $125 hook up =/= $200

At any rate .......... they got off light ..............
As Don said ............ Welcome to Miami.

Here's one... If you KNOW that the driver's committed a crime, then you go inside to "get the cash." You come back out with a chunk of blued steel. Are they going to call the cops and admit THEY were committing a crime?

That is a dicey situation at best.. the way the laws are written unless you are in fear for your life you cannot even show a firearm. Regardless of whether they are wrong or not the person with the firearm would be the one going to prison for a long time. Granted I have been tempted before in similar situations, but knowing the laws I personally would not be willing to call their bluff since they also are commiting an illegal act.

You're probably right. Until they adopt a real Castle Doctrine here, NC's firearm laws are a little too restrictive.

So maybe a call to the police concerning "Obtaining Property Through False Pretense" might be in order. My signature only gets them so far if I can prove that I signed under duress.
