Seriously though - aren't there people on the subs that are supposed to notice things (like, I don't know, other subs!) approaching them? Aren't boomers supposed to be A) relatively stealthy, and B) relatively vigilant? I can see the stealth part causing problems with detection (that is the general idea), but aren't they also supposed to be tracking other objects as potential threats?

Will they get similar treatment as the captain who grounded his cruiser at Pearl a week or so ago?

I guess that's the idea, and perfectly fine if the thing you are tracking is a Maersk beast.

But I presume the issue here was that two 'advanced' (I don't know the tech specs so I assume further) subs were the factors, not a sub and a ship et al.

I guess it shows though that the technology was working, to a degree. As someone was quoted as saying on Reuters, they are meant to be 'holes in the water'. So I guess they just really were invisible to each other.

Which I doubt is true but there we go, got to play devil's advocate.

Of course someone might've just been playing tag, but instead severely screwed up. :engel016::ernae:
 
What gets me about that article is the anti-nukes people screaming. Read your history people. there hasn't been any radiation from thresher and she's in a couple of million pieces after her implosion on the bottom of the Atlantic.

The Russian navy has a bunch of subs sitting on the bottom that aren't leaking rads either.

There's no way there could have been a radiation leak from what is essentially an underwater fender bender. Russians and the US had a few during the cold war.

I've always felt if you want safe nuclear power, let the USN/Royal navy run the reactors. (No offense but I wouldn't let the Russian navy within 50 miles of a reactor)
