How do I target a specific enemy plane?

I am use to EAW where I can target 'closest enemy'. I can find 'target attacker' but that does me no good if the enemy I want to attack is not attacking me at all. I see 'next friend' and 'previous friend' but no 'next enemy' or 'previous enemy'. I do see 'next target' but is that always an enemy? I don't want to rotate through a whole set of enemy planes and ground objects. And does distance make a difference on the targeting choice or ability?

I think 'next target' is next enemy...but if it's white on your radar screen, it's unknown and might be friendly.

That depends on your pilot's vision rating. A high vision rating makes those white dots turn red or blue from a much further distance. And you will have to cycle through 'targets' until you get the one you want.

I usually go to 'padlock' view and then start cycling...that way my head points to each target as I cycle and get a better idea of where he's at.

AFAIK it is cyclic through all enemy OR unknown targets. This is a pity as once targeted, the dot is yellow and will remain targeted even if closing you and you should realise it's a friend !
One thing I do is changing the range to 1 nm because only targets in that range will be selected. This reduces the amount of target you cycle trough.
I have dedicated one 4 way hat to radar : next/previous target, range, target type.

Hope it helps.

hit "t" to cycle throught the targeting options....aircraft, buildings, vehicles, ships, or all......pick what you want. Your "targeted" thing will show red when it's within four miles.....white outside that range. For close work select 1mi range and the red ones are all the bad chaps that can bone you immediately......don't know if the closest are picket first....just that cycling throught next target cover 'em all......so if you're ranged to 8mi you've hundreds....at 1mi....a manageable few.

ah, so is set the targeting options say to just aircraft, say within 4 miles. then set the 'un-select target' key and the 'next target' right next to each other. That way I can hit the two keys in quick succession and get my desired results.

knowing that sometimes I will get a friendly is a key understanding. Just hoping the 'next target' is in order of nearest to more distant. Can't try it here as at this place I don't have CFS3 or a puter that can play it.

best bet is to set your "spot" view which you reach cycling thru the F4 key, to target/player instead of player/taget by hitting ctl F4....as ronnyb suggested earlier....that way when you repeatedly hit your next target button you'll see what coming
