How many of you have lost your MSFS in an overnight?

Well, Hell visited me Saturday. Friday MSFS was performing like a gem. I get up Saturday morning, it starts loading and I get a message than my device does not have the recommended specifications for MSFS and some problems may occur. What? Man, you can't go but one tier higher than what I have in a PC. Anyhow, screen turns black and I spend the rest of the day trying to get into MSFS, can't even find the file in AppDate, can't find FlightSimulator.exe. Nothing! Gone in an overnight sleep! I ended up having to uninstall the entire sim, which in itself was Hades. You could not find MSFS in Settings > Apps to Terminate, Reset, Repair, or Uninstall! Let me tell you, the marriage between MS and Xpox (yes, for me I spelled that correctly, that's exactly what I think of it). But anyhow yesterday I was able to reinstall all (took all day), but even then, it failed to put an icon to open MSFS and FlightSimulator.exe could not be found! Well, I found it in System 32 of all places and made me a special icon that doesn't have to deal with all of Asobo's opening screen crap. I don't know if you care to use it, but I have been a Windows geek since MS-DOS and I have a book larger than the Holy Bible on Windows. Anyhow, all you do is open Command Prompt and copy and paste this after the >.

"C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /C start shell:AppsFolder\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe!App -FastLaunch"

Do not use the " and beginning at end. Thank me later if you use it and like it. Use whatever drive your MSFS is on if not "C".

Sitting on the barstool next to Cazzie with a whisky. "Yes, Caz. Windows Apps are all bitches. They lead you along, making you think they are sweet and loving. Then, you wake up one morning and they are gone, usually taking all your data with them."

“But, what are we going to do? We are addicted to them. MS, their goddess knows this and uses it to give us just enough pleasure so we will want more. It’s a hell of a life buddy…Barkeep, another round, if you please.”

John,

Up to 8 or 10 years ago, I welcomed the challenge that Windows often gave me. In my increasing old age, I have come to where I can't tolerate all the security measures and I also totally lack the patience I once had. Things get thrown! I never, ever hit or kick anything, but like a woman, I will throw an object in a heartbeat. Barkeep, keep those rounds coming.

Hey Barkeeper - I don't know what these guys are drinkin' but I want that too....with easy ice :ernaehrung004:

Talking about throwing. I have been fighting an OpenXR error that won't allow me to use my Reverb G2 with MSFS. I have wanted to throw the headset more than once. However, considering how much it cost and that it isn't the problem, I haven't.

Who's the new guy? You think we can get him to buy us a round?

Welcome JCase!

If all you people had just bought Commodore Amigas in the 80s and kept the company alive, we wouldn't be having these problems. :)

But noooo, "It has be IBM-compatible!" "Why?" "I don't know, but it's important!

So we got saddled with a bloated, quirky OS built on top of a house of MS-DOS cards.

There's a switch to disable it if you are using DX12, it's not compatible yet.

Lou, I am not sure what switch you are referecing? I get an error that says, “The initialization of VR failed. Please check that OpenXR is installed…”. This happens regardless if I am in DX11 or DX12. I have deleted and reinstalled Windows Mixed Reality, OpenXR, several times. I ever uninstalled and reinstalled MSFS2020.

I am back to using TrackIR and frankly, to me, it sucks. After VR, going back to flatscreens and TrackIR is like going back to B&W TV.

Well, I can't speak to that. But the absolute nonsense way in which Asobo organized (or rather, didn't organize) the file structure for MSFS and how it is a royal pain to mod anything....it's astonishing. adding a simple livery is a ridiculous proposition. It seems like it's structured in the most user-unfriendly way possible in order to discourage 3rd party modifications by the casual simmer. A very "Xbox" thing to do.

OK, must be a different issue then. My sim was crashing in dx12 initially but was fine after I turned off the Open XR toolkit.

Not sure what headset you have, jmig, but I'd suggest making sure the proper "OpenXR Runtime" module is set for your headset; that might be why it won't initialize.

This article shows where you set that for various headsets: Oculus, Windows Mixed Reality (Reverb G2), Vive, etc:
https://vrheadsettech.com/set-oculus-as-active-openxr-runtime/

It is correct. I think I have read everything online concerning the HP Reverb G2 and OpenXR. The little demo will run, so the headset is working with Windows Mixed Reality. It will work with Valve games and DCS. It just won't work with MSFS. Frustrating!!!

But of all the stuff you mention, only MSFS uses OpenXR. DCS and the Valve stuff all use SteamVR. All of those will still work if your OpenXR settings are SNAFU.

If you don't have it already, grab the OpenXR Tools for Windows Mixed Reality from the Microsoft Store:

https://www.microsoft.com/store/productId/9N5CVVL23QBT

It should flag with an error if there's any issue with the OpenXR settings, and give you a chance to fix/troubleshoot it. Mine is working so I'm going from memory here, but I think what you do is click the Mixed Reality tab in the app, and under Installation status, it'll tell you it's not properly set as your OpenXR runtime.
