How much memory for the GPU

No longer active
Hi folks,

I'm running FSX at a 1900 res and ordered a GTX 460 with 1GB RAM.
They are telling me that they only have a 768MB version....AFAIK this is too little for any program running at 1900. Is that correct?
The only other solution would be a HD 5770 or 5870 but I'm reluctant to use an ATI card with FSX...

Any help would be highly appreciated!

Thanx

Bernt

As long as we are talking the same speed on ram I would say more is always better than less.

In this case my choice would be to cancel the order and shop elsewhere or ask them to back order it until it comes in.

Myself I would not substitute the AMD card but that is just my choice.

Under no circumstances would I take the 768 mb card when I ordered the 1 GB.

Again all personal preferences.

Thanx a lot lot for all you replies :) It's a new custom built fanless PC so I have to go with what they offer and if 768MB is enough I'm happy with that of course (and if I want it delivered this week)!

The main difference between the 1 GB and 768 MB versions is memory bandwidth (and power consumption).

It appears to make a difference in other games. Don't know about FSX 'though.

Bjoern is right about this...if you play the newer games it may matter, but I believe you are getting a fanless video card for a reason you mentioned. Anyway if it is just for FSX it will work even in PNW. But keep that case cool so you can get optimal performance out of that video card.

Hello-
I happen to be shopping for a GTX 460 myself... From what I've seen, there's 3 different amounts of memory available on these cards (768MB, 1GB, 2GB), in addition to 2 or 3 different clock speeds. At this point it would appear that the best bang for the buck among these would be a 1GB GTX 460 made by Palit- they call it the 'Sonic Platinum'. It's the fastest of all the GTX 460 vid cards, and I've seen it for sale between $200- $220. In 2 reviews I've read, it hangs in with much more expensive cards... Across town I've got a Micro Center store that has them in stock, which is where I'll probably get it... -Mike Z.
