How things work

i've been uming and arring about posting this incase it derails into a handbag fight at dawn over pixels but here goes. Its full of my humour, which depending on how much coffee you need in the morning might drive you crazy of kill you with laughter. Also its possible that the following text will make english teachers cry!. Now the health and saftey warnings done with lets move on :)

Theres been mutterings about some companies showing screenshots of models whilst currents models could do with some attention. This doesnt mean a developer has given up on released products and moved on, it just means the modelers not needed for any potential patchs.

Confused? well heres the way most devlopers work.

Firstly you have the modeler who does the actually model (the pretty shape you look at)
Then you have the painter who makes the textures (gives colour to the pretty shape you look at)
Then possible you have a coder, allthough sometimes the modeler does this (this gets the pretty colourfull shape into FSX)
Then you have the FDE maker (who makes pretty colourfull shape fly as it should)
Then you have the sound maker (who gives a voice to pretty colourfull shape)

so thats 4/5 people for a plane.

Ok so lets skip ahead, the pretty colourfull shape with a voice has been released .. but theres a problem, its lost it voice when it rains. Now we have a problem, because ...

the modeler has allready started a pretty thing mk2
the painter has allready started getting info on pretty thing mk2
the fde maker is doing likewise
the sound maker is doing likewise

now do we tell the whole team to stop working on what their doing? .. or do we just get the sound maker to take a look as its a sound problem? Easy choice really, you get the sound guy to take a look whilst keeping everyone else working!

So whilst sound maker is looking into what causes the loss of voice on pretty colourfull shape, the company release screenshots of pretty thing mk2 that the modeler has just finished but the company get shouted at for not fixing pretty colourfull shape .. when in fact they are! You'd get a bit fed up with that wouldnt you??

Of course, if a company has a couple of teams, then you might see a preview of another teams work before the other team has even finished theirs, it doesnt mean that the company has droped the product or isnt putting as much effort into finishing it.

Moral of the story?? just because you see previews of 1 pretty colourfull shape doesnt mean the other pretty colourfull shape has been abandond! :)

Yeah but when I downloaded the pretty shape mk1, or was it just the screen shot of pretty shape mk2, can't remember. Oh well it doesn't really matter cause I just wanted to moan and bitch about something so you got chosen cause ya did. Anyway the pretty shape mk whatever didn't actually fly itself and I crashed and all and that made me mad, cause I think I'm the worlds best pilot. So there. And how are you going to fix it so I don't crash pretty shape mk2, or 1, or whatever?

And how does four fifths of a person do all that anyway?

LOL
Well written Stiz
Great laugh but oh so true.

Paul

PS. I am the worlds greatest pilot.... Really truly am. In my world anyway. Population 1. When the voices aren't butting in.

Great post, Stiz! :)

It may be even harder for those teams with only 2 guys to cover all of those tasks, let alone 4-5! It certainly generates more reason and passion to get it right the first time though, lol.

Another part of it, on a more serious note, is as a business, it is hard investing critical time while working to bring good funds into the company to keep it going, by spending a lot or all of the developer's time working on a patch for an existing product, which will not bring in any additional income from that work (save the few sales which may be generated from folks who would only now buy the product once 'fixed'). As I see it, the only real investment by a company doing a lot of work on a patch, would be for the long-term, customer loyalty, which of course is a good thing to have. For this reason, I give a lot of respect to companies that actually create such patches, for free mind you, to correct things and make things better, and as such, I feel it is right to be respectfully patient to wait for the release of said patch, when the company feels they have done everything they could to make those fixes, and knowing that they have tried their best to fit that extra-work in, whenever possible.
