How To... Backups

This is probably not the place for this but I trust the knowledge of the more experienced computer guys here. I’ve got an external HDD now so back ups can be made for my CFS2 installs. Currently there are three. Stock, PTO, and PTO/China. You never think it is going to happen but eventually something will go bad on the computer system….and then all is lost. :crybaby: When trying to copy a whole install to the external HDD (everything in CFS2 root per install) XP will give an error message, they are very random as far as to which ones, for some .bmp’s or air files. The message is “cannot find the file path for XXXX”. My guess is that this is most likely due to the multiple installations. The back ups were tried by both simple copy and paste, and then the Windows Back-up Utility. These two methods gave the same error message. Whaddaya think? Maybe the Jean Bomber .bat method is better??? Any advice would be most appreciated. Don’t worry…I will not hold anybody liable if something goes south. :icon_lol:
Thanks

I simply dragged and dropped the entire install into my backup folder. Haven't had a problem yet!

dvslats, I'm running XP and when I copied multiple installs to my external HD I just highlighted the Microsoft Games folder in program files, copied it and pasted it into the external HD. It took ages but the copy was a good one.

Thanks for the replies Rami and Ravenna. I thought it should be that easy. When my OS was Windows Me, it would work just like you gents stated. P'bly got a gremlin somewhere...

xp

I can program my external to automatically backup... supposedly only adding or replacing the changes in files. More trouble then it's worth so copy and paste.
Burning to DVD is another option which saved me once ,,,big time.

Hi, i burn to dvd and copy to external using western digital external drive. i copy whole folder to it. No probs here with XP or Vista.
