I am tired of the ugly AI

and want to pretty them up by simply replacing the stock paints with nicer ones from the various sites. But I am not sure if the player flyable 747 is the plane that the sim uses as the AI 747. Is it? Does FS2004 use the player flyable planes as AI or are there dedicated AI versions tucked away somewhere within the sim?

OBIO

The only player-flyable 747 I know is the default one (made for being used as plane and as AI both, it's not all that hot). If you download another more detailed plane for flying, be this a 747 or whatever, you MIGHT be able to use this plane as an AI, if you learn how to code traffic .BGL files, but the resources asked by the sim to show a complex flyable detailed plane as an AI would transform your nice FS9 in a replica of FSX in no time, performance-wise. :isadizzy:

After all, more a more detailed plane means a more performance-heavy plane.

Even if you download and install the WOAI or PAI traffic, you'll see that the planes that come with them are not at all that iper-detailed. The AI is there to make you feel less alone in the of-line simulated world, at the same time though each and every AI plane takes a slice of resources away, and so it's better to make said slice as small as possible. :)

After all, what use would you have of a sim where all the AI are beautifully detailed, but between a frame and another you'll be able to leisurely sip a cup of coffe? :toilet:

You can get a whole host of freeware AI planes at Flightsim under the name of AI Aardvark. Search AI Aardvark

their site http://www.ai-aardvark.com

Their repaints http://www.ai-aardvark.com/aiaircraft/aiaircraft.html

They have the base models on the repaints page it will have a link to Flightsim and AVSIM. It is just as easy to search Flightsim's site.

Their AI planes are not player flyable and are designed to give good frame rates by having multiple LODs

There are many repaints out there for their planes. Their site only lists repaints prior to some time in 2006. Probably because they ran out of web space. :icon_lol:

There is a nice selection of 747's available as objects to be placed with Runway 12 etc. They look good and are frame rate friendly. Then just add a few AI to meet your needs.

Many of the Aardvark AI are very good, though some are FS2002 and need an update, also available. Many of the airliners have full flappery, tyre smoke on landing and working clamshell thrust reversal.

I don't think I was clear enough on what I want to do.....replace the stock skins on the AI planes with some that look better....who has ever seen an all orange 747? Very ugly. Would love to see some nicer looking paint jobs on the AIs as I watch them take off and land. As far as the detail level on the stock aircraft, I could really care less....the only stock planes that I fly are the Lockheed Vega, Jenny, DC-3, Cessna 172 and 182. The rest of the stockers are of no importance, other than when I spend some time in "spectator mode" watching the the AI at various airports.

So, are the stock 737, 747, 777, C208, etc, used as Player and AI? If I drop new skins into the default folders and leave all the config info the same, that should give me better looking planes that still function without having to rewrite the AI flight stuff?

Yes, the player flyable default aircraft are the same ones used by the default FS9/AI flight plans.

You can get ready-made replacement packs for the default textures...search "AI Replacement Pack" at flightsim.com. Tony Potter made a number of them.

Or you can do your own textures or add your favs by others, but remember that in order to just stick with the default AI flightplan, the title line for each texture in the aircraft.cfg has to remain the same as the default one.
Any additional airline textures beyond the default 3 or 4 will have to be added by you with TTools.

It's much nicer to see "American" airlines and hear ATC reference that instead of Orbit.

Hope that helps.

Hi Obio, have you consider'd ditching the stock Ai and installing the Cal-classics ai instead, judging by your taste, i think you'd appreciate it, painless to install and relativly easy on frames. here's the site to look over
http://www.calclassic.com/
cheers ian

I am planning on breaking down my current single install into three separate installs:

Golden Wings for early era (1903 to 1950)
Silver Wings (1950 to 1970)
Aluminum Wings (1970 to present)

And I will have a basic stock install into which I will temporarily add new planes while I tweak and mod them...once modified to my taste, planes will be moved into the correct era install.

Concerning the CalClassics AI packages, do they have anything for Mansfield Lahm (KMFD)? I have the goal of creating AI traffic for the 179th Air Lift Wing doing their practice/training flights around the area. I see the C-130s nearly every day. A couple times a week, I will get a flight of three or four Hercs flying LOW LOW LOW over my house....sounds incredible!

You can use absolutely any FS9 aircraft as AI if you wish. There's nothing to stop you - as long as you're prepared for the massive overhead that high resolution airframes cause. I've used the Alphasim Lightnings as AI for my RAF Binbrook, and their impact is nothing short of staggering.

You do have to modify the AIR file, though. You have to set the aircraft type to zero.
The values are: 2=AI-only, 1=flyable-only, 0=both.

Ive taken a few flights from KMFD at differnt times of the day, and there dos'nt seem to be, Cal classics do'se have a military transport package but its mainly 50's MATS transports, pre C130 im afraid,
