how to title this thread.

my question is, when i press "alt" to get the menu, it pauses the sim, and i would like it not to do that. i could swear that when i installed fs9 that i had a choice, but now i can't figure out how to change it. is this in my imagination?
 
think your problem is that something has changed the default key assignments

installed any add on before this happened?

look in the assignments and try to re-assign with your preferred key!

one thing I discovered
trying to assign another function with "alt" it is a free key mean it is assigned to nothing by default!
but can be assigned to any other function

so if your pause key is assigned to "alt" change to P if it is not assigned to an other function P is default pause

Hitting the alt key in FS9 will always pause the action. FSX changed that - you can use the menus without pausing the action unless you pull up something like the aircraft selection menu.

The one thing in FS9 you can control is whether the Sim pauses when you switch "focus" to another window or program. That's under Settings > General - look for the "Pause on task switch" setting and uncheck or check that as needed. I normally keep it unchecked so that I can use other things like Teamspeak during multiplayer flights.
