I finally did it

I finally bought an extrenal hard drive. It's a Seagate 2 TB ,but doesn't come with very good instructions. IF I bring up the software control panel called GoFlex Desk in my documents ,you supposed to drag and drop your files to back up. I thought I could just drag the aircraft file for instance to the control panel but every time you click on a folder the backup control panel goes to minimize ,so I copy and paste or drag the folder to my documents, if you do that you can then drag and drop to the backup control panel with out it minimizeing . It's like you can only drag and drop if it's on the same page as the backup control panel.
I tried it with my addon scenery folder ,( after trying it with my aircraft file and totally loseing it, had to do a system restore to get it back, almost had a heart attack). Any way it seemed to work with addon scenery ,took a while for the addon scenery folder to copy over to my documents ,but after it did, I could then drag and drop it to the backup control panel, and hit start back up and it seemed to back it up. It will take forever to do the same with the larger files like aircraft, but after the first back up it should update when I make any changes and be quicker.
I'am not at all sure I'am doing this right, and will have to read (was it OBIO's "how to back up fs9 perfectly") As for now I'am just leaving it hooked up (usb) until I get FS9 and my other sims backed up. At first it automatically wanted to back up the whole c drive ,but I finally found how to stop it.
So be prepared for lots of questions. Thanks

I would suggest getting a little program called Snapshot. Works a charm and unlike many other backup programs the .sna files are not locked. So if you just want to grab one single file you don't need to unpack the whole thing and then re-pack it.

If you do want to restore the Sim after a failure or screw up you start the restore operation, get a cold drink or two and everything is back to normal.

Of course there are other programs like this ... But I know and use this one.

Cheers

Thanks for sharing that. I also own an external (500 gb free agent 'go') and wanted to do this for a while.

getting help

I called my computer repair people and one of the guys is comming over next week to show me how to do a back up. I have lots of questions ,and a copy I made of how to "backup FS9 perfectly" and I also just remembered that years ago I bought a copy of Norton Ghost and had that installed for a while so maybe he can uninstall the backup software that came with the drive and reinstall Ghost. As I remember it wasn't that hard to use.

Most of the bigger externals come with a little software deal that is designed to mesh with the MS directory structure. If you do what it says it may automatically update documents and settings, favorites, my pictures and other default folders. I scrapped that plan with mine and made my own folders for all things FS. Once the first big copy over was done I just update each folder whenever it seems needed.

poor software instructions

The bacup software that came with the external are not very clear on how to use it. I went to their website but the model name that matches mine didn't seem to jive with mine. Like I said I think when my computer guy comes I'll ask him about my copy of Norton Ghost, which is one reason I had a second HD put in ,in the first place. It was supposed to be for backups only, but I ended up filling it up with programs.
I only need to back up most of my flight sims ,since everything else probley won't run on a new computer and if it does, they only require a few patches ,which I have on CD.
I'am still rebuilding FS9 ,I have 45 CD's and am working backward so I get the latest updated planes and stuff. I'am now on disk 28(like I said woring back from disk 45.)
Usually take about 3 hours to reinstall from a disk ,I have lots on them .
I started doing 3 a day but it's just too tireing ,so now only doing one a day.
I just hope I get everything backed up before the computer decides to die. I run the Dell checkup and keep the virus protection up to date and ( I hope I don't jinks myself for saying this) and run CCleaner plus another registery tool and do a disk cleanup every day and defrag with the Windows defragger and so far this 9 year old is running great. I can run FS9 with almost all sliders maxed out, but you never know when somethings gonna give up.
Actually I'am on my third graphics card and most every thing in the tower has been replaced during those nine years at least once.
Wish me luck
