I just saw a shooting star, meteor

I was just out on the patio having a quick smoke, happened to look up at the clear, oh so clear sky, and saw the brightest shooting star I have ever seen. And it was LOW...or it seemed to be. I could see the red tail on the thing and see smaller chunks tearing off the main body of the object and burning up. It looked like it was just a few thousand feet up, if that. It was so bright. And the tail was so defined...such intense colors in it. Too bad we aren't equipped with USB ports in our heads so we could download the things we see so we could share them on Youtube.

That sounds like a scene from Men in Black. I would be careful about talking to cockroaches, if I were you.

Crap! didn't War of the Worlds start like that too.

LOL John, good'un.

You just saw what is called a bolide OBIO. Most meteors are only the size of a grain of sand or a pebble at best. But a bolide can be anywhere from the size of a fist to a human head. They will generally be seen with a smoky tail and will often splinter into two or more pieces. When close you can hear them, them sound like a jet, with a loud "whoosh" sound.

Bolides often become meteorites as they are so large they do not burn up in Earth's atmosphere.

As a kid, one of the most spectacular things that I remember is seeing a huge flaming object fall from the sky, I believe to this day, that it was the object that landed in Kecksburg PA

I remember seeing one of these one afternoon whilst out driving back in 2003/2004. A large fireball with a long smoky tail....pretty impressive looking. From the initial "sighting" in my peripheral vision till the time it vanished out of sight was maybe around 2 seconds.
