I know they've only got to out fly me.. but how do the AI pilots do it?

Does anyone out there know? I really really would like to know .. any pointers to the articles or books
Thinking about it.. Here's my 'for starters' ..
1) the AI planes have to move sufficiently like planes to appear realistic.. They have to do a smooth stall turn , roll or Immelmann ,or what ever to look good. :wiggle:
This means there some seriously plausible physical model being used. ie there's a little 3D coordinate system moving with aeronautically appropriate 6 dof in the 3D space.. (talking of which I can assure you a Cessna 150 aerobat doesn't spin anything like the OFF Camel!) BUT even so the general flying of the AI is smooth and looks real and skillful... Whether or not they can land better than I can .. I dont know.. :wiggle:
So just how they do the 'free' flight is an interesting question in itself..
Now there are Rookies (!) Veterans and Aces.. Do they have different models reflecting different degrees of
flying skill .. rudder coordination say... how is it implemented?

2) The AI planes generally seem to respond sensibly.. mostly :kilroy:
I'm creaking up behind them moments from the stall , they're almost in the sight and they suddenly kick rudder and fall away into a dive rolling underneath me.. So they probably have a set of rules of tactics.. See wehyam here doing M, while you're doing X, then do A.. see wehyam there doing N while you're doing Y, do B .. etc.. Which means the AI has to know where I am , what I'm doing, what its doing and what's a good thing to do. So the question is what situational details does the AI 'know', and how are they represented? Do they have a set of defensive and attacking tactical 'cliches' triggered by different situations and 'tasks' ... What complexity of situations can be 'recognised'?
Is your wingman clever enough to know that now is not the time to dive down and machine gun the herd of cows but its time to cover your **** (there always were 4 letters in 6).:wiggle:
So do the Veterans and Aces have a better range of 'responses' situational criteria .. than the rookies? what???

Some one really clever has programmed the AI.. and it has to happen in real time.. heirarchical goals etc but I would really like to know how clever the AI actually are.. and how much of it is 'smoke and mirrors' ..

you dont have to be very clever to fool me you know.. :isadizzy:
How do you find out about this stuff?

The AI pilots are not restricted to this human form. The best I can do is. . produce two lumps on the rear of my skull. They on the other hand, have by their actions, shown the ability to develop fully functional eyeballs

Wait . . It'll get worse. While it can't be prooved, my suspicions are that the AI pilots are not effected by the cloaking effects of heavy cloud cover, they see you with total clarity. Thankfully ( or so I've been told ) in Phase 3, they will no longer have the ability to place a burst of bullets with accuracy, from ranges thought impossible.

Also people have been known, to spend money, destined to pay the rent, to purchase a more powerful computer. Because a fact that cannot be overlooked, is that elevated sliders introduce you, to a better level of performance by the AI in Campaign :applause::applause:

Hmm, Gimpy.. I'll take that as a no.. no as in "I have no idea what is involved or any insight into how the AI is programmed" .. :kilroy: "except that their situational awareness does not seem to take visibility into account"

Surely you didn't think the developers were going to share their secrets with the members of this forum :costumes:

Why not?

I've signed the Offical Secrets Act.

I am a member of the dodgy handshake club

The Queen Trusted me enough to give me her commision in the Royal Air Force.

She also trusted me enough to employ me to enforce her laws (I was going to say "To up hold her peace" but with the way some minds work around here I thought that unwise!)

Why will they not tell me?

Hello,

@wildfowler
i have heard the Royal Family changed its name from "Sachsen-Coburg Gotha" to "Windsor" during WW1, since they did not want to be associated with the Gotha bombing attacks, and suffer the same fate as William 2nd did after the war - any idea if this is really true ?

the secrets ...
quoting W.C. Fields,
"i am a member of the bare-handed wolf-choker's association"
Does that count ?
Now the secrets, please :icon_lol:

Greetings,
Catfish

They did indeed change their name. It was felt innappropriate to have a royal family with a German surname while at war with Germany. I believe the decision was forced upon them, the King wasn't keen, but politics and public opinion forced through the change.

@ Wildfowler too!
I have a friend who was a TAC in the RAF and then joined the Police and lives in Suffolk. Is it a pre-requisite to retire to East Anglia and join the force if you serve in the RAF :)

BTW.. if you want them back Catfish.. I'm sure there's a significant number in the UK would let you have them.. nice to think that WWI was a 'family squabble'.. sickening isnt it..
Oh Wildowler.. what a history of respectability.. Hm..:kilroy: fancy disclosing that past.. and being proud of it?

BUT does anyone know anything about how and what the AI know...:wiggle:
or how to find out about it?

Hi Wehyam: I think it is probable that nobody here knows the intimate details of how the AI progeamming works. The AI is basically a 'black box' and the only way to really see the inner workings would be have the decomplied AI code (assuming one was smart enough to decipher it), or get the info from one of the original programmers. Maybe there was a developer interview way back with the Microsoft team (as sometimes happens when new games come out), but if so I can't find anything on line.

One person that might add a few pieces to the puzzle would be RexHannover. He tweaked the AI files for Phase 3 (basically getting slower WW1 aircraft data versus WW2 data in there for the AI to work with). He could probably tell you what parameters the AI is working with, and this might allow an educated guess on how the AI is working within that black box.

If someone knows more I am sure they will chime in here soon.

Respectability....... ah that imposter........I seem to remember Lord Lucan was believed respectable, as was Dr Crippen, not to mention my Uncle Albert. In fact we don't mention Uncle Albert.....never.....ever.

But what's going to happen to Admiral Halsey? Who's going to make his cup of tea and a butter pie? (the butter wouldn't melt so he put it in a pie.):d
