I messed up again

hurricane3

SOH-CM-2023
I tried to install the Utah Beach-Normandy scenery from Flight Sim, the readme was very hard to understand and vague ,because the man who made the scenery is French and would mix French words with English and it just wasn't explaned well.
I should have stopped there but I went ahead and did what I thought was what he ment, that is since there was no file to put in addon scenery and activate in the normal way ,after unzipping the file I had a scenery zip and a texture zip.
I unzipped the scenery to the scenery file in addon scenery and the texture zip to the texture file in addon scenery.
I ended up with scenery, but almost none of the houses and scenery objects are textured, most are gray or white. Their not the usual white blocks ,they look like houses , cathedrels Towers and stuff but arent textured.
Then I really screwed up by doing a system restore ,didn't change the scenery back to stock but messed up my ITO's DO335 which I had just changed the FDE, panel and sound on. I had to go back and redo these.
Since there is nothing in the scenery libray to uninstall I can't change the scenery back.
My main question is did I install the scenery correctly and if not, can I reinstall to get textures for the buildings, or is this just a vidio or driver issue?I already have the hightest driver that can be used with my card ,so I'am thinking that since there is no way to get rid of this scenery I'am just going to have to live with it.

Not to worry, I'll try to pull up the readme from the one you are working on but in the mean time, first if you didn't already, you might want to un-do the restore to get things, especially non-FS things back to where they were. Second, if you can, get a flash drive or external HD keep copies of all the aircraft you customize. Third and last, probably the scenery you were installing just needs files from another source. Many people make sceneries this way and the sources are usually cited in the readme. They can be from previous scenery packages by the same author, another author, or something like NovaGold. So this is what you do first- surf over to Flightsim.com and logon, then go to Home/Main Menu. Now scroll down to the Must Have Files link and click on that. Now under Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 start downloading the first 9 links for textures and objects. This will take time and some perseverance because they are big files but these are files needed by many scenery packages to show properly. Let me know when you get this far and I will post or PM some help to get them loaded. Anybody else want to chime in with other ideas? Have to run now.

First, never put textures in the addon scenery texture folder. And never put anything in the addon scenery scenery folder except afcads. Put all afcads there. Of course you can do this but if you want to keep things straight, don't.

You should simply delete all the files that you put into the addon scenery scenery and texture folders.

Then make a new folder and call it anything (I mean anything you want lol). Then put that folder in addon scenery and install normally.

well first

First thing I've found is the only thing else affected by the system restore was the Do335, second there were hundreds of scenery and texture files that went into the addon scenery , scenery and texture file and I just can't spend another day trying to figure out what to delete ,I worked from 10 am till 1:30 am ,and just can't spend another day working on this. All my scenery other than a few that were messed up before is ok, so is it ok to just leave all those files I put in addon scenery where they are I will try first to download all the files that aeromed told me.

...... second there were hundreds of scenery and texture files that went into the addon scenery , scenery and texture file and I just can't spend another day trying to figure out what to delete ......

There are 172 scenery files in this package, it is possible to remove them relatively simply; but let's see if Aeromed can rescue the situation first.

Just a quick update; I have also now installed this scenery & also get the white buildings. As far as I can recall I have previously installed all the old Nova etc textures (and I redid it, just to make sure) and there is no mention in the Readme (or the Lisez Moi) of anything extra being needed. At the moment it is looking like errors within the release.

the problem is

I'am currently downloading files ,but when you said the first 9 files under FS2004 when you click on them ,most goes to a page that has at least four or more files ,so I'am downloading the first file at the top of the page.
I'll give you a list of the files I downloaded when I'am done. I do have an external 1 terrabyte HD that has all my most modded flight sims, and have 63 cd's that I've backed up everything too. But going through all these cd's to find something ,even though I have most everything written on a jewel case card board that slips inside the jewel case can be a real pain.
If this is going to take another day ,I'll just forget it,cause I can't spend another day and partly into the night sitting in front of this computer.Currently downloading the EZ1 zip which is takeing an hour, one more zip and I'll have the nine.

ok

Ok I'am downloading the last zip, here are the names of the zip files I have.aip 210tx,asd21txt,txtur202,vodtext,ez1,novaqt,novatxt3,rw12pq12,rwy12_1,which I'am downloading now. So what do I need and don't need that I've downloaded.

AutoGen Slider

Hurricane3,
Toni says to turn up the autogen or you will see 'stains' where the buildings are supposed to be at. The files install as for any other: make a folder under 'AddOn Scenery' and name it 'Utah Beach' (or whatever). Then make a 'Scenery' folder and a 'Texture' folder under that 'Utah Beach' folder. Extract Scenery.zip to Scenery folder. Extract Texture.zip to Texture folder. Then go activate like usual. Restart FS9 (make sure to move 'AutoGen' slider to DENSE (?)). That's it. And I don't think the 'objects' files (Gold, etc, and especially Rnwy12) are needed at all. Good to have but not mandatory in FS9/FSX scenery as they use FS9/FSX objects ('default') instead. And Toni has been making scenery/mesh since 2001 so don't blame him if you mess up (hehe).

When you are going to do a restore, make sure you secure ALL the aircraft.cfg's (rename to 'aircraft.cfg.txt' and say yes to 'Are You Sure' 'warning'). I do this to all my cfg's. The way I do it is to make 'Copy of Aircraft.cfg' and then with left mouse you highlight and then click a second time on file name (ie: 'nudge' it) and it will 'open' for add of '.txt' to end of name. Click on a folder or file name (ie: 'anywhere') to 'apply' edit. Done. A restore will not delete air files, so they are 'safe'.

To 'uninstall' a scenery, you go Library and un-check the scenery. The next time you start FS9 it will re-build the scenery.cfg file autoatically. For FSX it does it right away after you un-check the scenery. So if you leave the scenery there it is not 'activated' so FS9/FSX will not 'use' it. The 'IDEAL' way to do scenery is to make you own 'AddOn Scenery' folder and put all your scenery under that and leave the default 'AddOn Scenery' folder EMPTY (it's 'ok'). Why? Because FS9 and FSX 'looks' in it's default addon scenery folder everytime it starts. It only looks (ie: loads) the scenery in your AddOn Scenery if the scenery.cfg 'calls' the scenery. Benefit? You can un-check ALL your scenery, if you want, and it will not be loaded on start. Yet it will still be there when you get ready to 'use' it. Get it? OK!

The problem HAS to be with the package

Hurricane3,
Toni says to turn up the autogen or you will see 'stains' where the buildings are supposed to be at.

I have every conceivable addon library known to man (all the old Nova, vodtex, Airport 2.10 and the newer Rwy12/EZ Scenery etc); All my sliders are hard right (the benefits of a decent rig, which is why I can have an FS( install looking better than FSX and no stutters) - but still all I get are a load of white buildings. This scenery package looks like it could be very impressive (certainly the coverage on the cost is extensive) but there is a flaw somewhere, and I don't think that flaw is myself or Hurricane - in theory his 'uncoventional' installation could still have worked!

I know Toni Agramont has been doing this a long time, many of his sceneries are essential as far as I am concerned (his Spanish sceneries are superb, especially his coverage of the Balearics); but, until somebody can prove to me that I have done something wrong (and read the paragraph above again) then I am assuming that the error is with the actual package. Does anybody here speak Spanish? I would like to send an email to Toni, and I feel it would be better to send him details in his native language.

so I don't really need all those files

If the problem lies with the scenery it's self then I shoulnd't need all those files I downloaded ,although I already have Garrish Trees libary. The files might help some other scenery I have like Free Flow Burmuda that has a lot of white rectangeles instead of trees and lots of white buildings same with some of the Belgium scenery but I really hate to install all those files if I'am never going to need them. I'am really gunshy about trying another system restore since the last one didn't work ,though maybe I didn't go back far enough, the only planes I had installed after the restore point was ITO's DO 335 and Simtechs DO335. It totally messed up ITO's 335 ,made it lose the new FDE, made the panel go black with just the instruments showing and lost the new sound. The Simtech Do335 lost it's textures till I rebooted.
Since I messed up on the installation of the Utah beach scenery I can't reverse it unless I take out all 175 files and I'am not sure which to remove without messing up my good scenery and besides it would take all day to remove all of them.
Even though I did it wrong it must have worked since everything looks to be in the right place and I have all trees and a very few buildings textured and since Andy had the same thing happen it still must have worked the way I did it, but it's just not easily reverable.
I'll never again load scenery that I don't understand how to do or needs some other files.
The best way would be if we could write or email Toni(I thought he was French) and find a fix.
I was wondering if there is scenery that would over write the Utah beach scenery?

All that stuff you downloaded won't hurt your system and will help with other scenery packages, so don't worry about that.

I really don't have an answer to this; nobody else is responding to my questions, either here or at Flightsim, so no idea what to do next. :-(

guess I'll live with it

I guess I'll live with it the way it is, I haven't installed the files I downloaded and don't know if I will. Napamule I was not blameing Toni for this ,I just said I didn't understand the readme, and he did mix a few Spanish words in with English ,but for someone like you or Andy this wouldn't be a problem.
I seem to be getting in a lot of trouble the last while back in these forums ,and I don't want to get kicked out because of something I said that was taken in a way I didn't mean.( see the mess with the invasion stripes on Mike Stones B-25) I'am not a bad person, honest ,I don't mean to insult anyone, and am the first to admit, I messed up. Now I'll go stand in the corner for a while, does anyone know how to make a Dunce cap?

...... I messed up. Now I'll go stand in the corner for a while, does anyone know how to make a Dunce cap?

Not convinced you did, not entirely; don't be too hasty with that dunce cap (but go here, if you are really keen to do it :icon_lol: ) - until somebody shows me that they have a working installation, and tells me how they got it working, I AM working on the assumption that Toni Agramont has made an error (even veterans can make the occasional mistake). If I'm wrong I'll apologise & join you in the corner.

forgot something very important

I forgot to thank everyone who have tried to help me with this messup of mine, even though the scenery may have an error I still screwed up. So anyway thanks:salute: guys ,few people would be a willing to go above and beyond to help a fellow slight simmer.
And if anyone happens to find a way to fix this give me a yell.

oh something else

I found I have some of those files I downloaded and have them installed, like Rnwy 12 and two or three others.

Sorry that my game computer is belly up and may be in for a complete reinstall, ugh. And you probably didn't mess up, you just found something you didn't know yet or found a download that has issues, welcome to the club. I did manage to have a look at this Utah scenery package and it looks like everything was included along with some NovaGold textures and things, as well as a real confusing readme. Andy could easily be right that something is amiss with the package. A little background--others can bear this out but this is how I see scenery working. Every addon scenery must be made of three folders. One named whatever the scenery is and two subfolders, scenery and texture. All BGL files for that scenery go into scenery and all BMP files go into texture. Once that addon scenery is activated the BGL files tell the game to grab and display the texture files to give us the great FS we enjoy. So a plain white object like a house is a BGL file saying here is the house but there was no texture to color it with after looking in every addon texture folder as well as the main texture folder. A problem can be several places but usually it is simply a texture that you don't have yet. That's why downloading all those files will do wonders for you in the long run because they will or should give your game all it needs for anything you add to the scenery list. That was until Andy had the same problem and he said he has them all so contacting the author is a good next step.

All those files you got are well worth the time and this is how I have it on my machine and it works fine (it was my MB that died). When you're ready the simplest way to get those files loaded is to create an addon scenery folder called Libraries (or whatever you want) with its subfolders scenery and texture--> Libraries/scenery and texture. Then pick one of the zip files you downloaded (do Nova, Nova gold, rwy12 Scenery Library, or EZ Scenery Library), unzip it somewhere, locate the folder(s) with the BGL files and copy all of them to the scenery folder. Then locate all the BMP files and copy them the the texture folder. Don't copy over anything else like .xml files because those are for designers. Then firing up the game and activating it like any other addon scenery will make everything in it available for any other scenery that needs it. You then unzip everything else putting every BGL in that same Libraries/scenery folder and the same for all the BMP files into the Libraries/texture folder- overwriting whenever prompted in case somebody included files you already have. What you will then have is one big honkin addon scenery with hundreds of files, one big library. The good side is that I think it's the simplest way, the down side is that if there is a problem somewhere it is darn hard to isolate. So try doing what I outlined for one file set and see how it goes. Bear in mind that some downloads might have only BGLs and some might only have BMPs. That's fine, just put whatever you have in the right folder BMPs-->texture and BGLs-->scenery.

No fix for your current issue. The files you copied into rather general folders can only be extracted in a rather tedious manual way. If you unzip each of the sceneries zip files into a temp directory you might be able to find groups that are easier to locate in the general folders you copied them in.

For example many developers start all their file names with their initials. So in this case you might find a bunch of TA...... .bmp files in the texture folder and TA...... .bgl files in the scenery folder. In that case you could search for that TA lead in the folders you copied the files in.

The texture files will not hurt if left there. The bgl files however can cause problems down the road so I would try to clean that up. Even if it does take some time.

For the future if not 100% sure about what to do I would recommend sticking with one of two approaches.

1. Stop and ask BEFORE trying on your own.

Or.

2. Compare the new addition to a default of the same type. Airplanes have a certain folder structure...and any addition has to follow that basic structure. The same is true for sceneries.

If you unzip a new scenery for example it should end up with a main folder containing two sub folders. These always have the same names (scenery and textures) and contain files of that type. BGLs in scenery and BMP or other bitmap formats in textures.

You can then add the new main folder as is to the add-on scenery folder and activate the scenery with the library. Worst case scenario you deactivate and then delete the folder.
Keeping files separated is almost always the right choice. And before I deviate from that route there better be a real good reason.

Got it! And it turned out to be really straightforward; bit of a schoolboy error (as we say in England) on Toni Agramont's part!

As Aeromed said, within the scenery package there should be two folders, Scenery & Texture; if that is correct the package should work - effectively for these purposes FS9 looks at the Addon Scenery folder as one big scenery package, so it should have worked for Hurricane, even if it isn't recommended.

However, in this instance, what has happened is that there is a second folder called Texture inside the main texture folder; so FS9 can't 'ee' the textures, they are effectively hidden. Simple enough to remedy, just move the textures out to the correct folder - and then you do have a very nice scenery package.

I shall have to watch "A Bridge Too Far" tonight (it's the anniversary of Operation Market-Garden today) to get me in the mood for a bit of Horsa action tomorrrow - I wonder if he included Pegasus Bridge?

thanks Sunny

Thanks for the advice ,but I found I already have the files Aeromed mentioned,
Nova gold, rway12 etc, installed in the way the readme's said, so far none of the other scenery's seem affected so I'am leaving well enough alone. I was just flying over the Utah beach scenery and notice that some buildings are textured on the sides but have white roofs, but most have no texture at all.
If down the road I find I'am haveing problems ,I will try and delete the bgl files but it's not going to be easy.I may just do a total reinstall or just forget about FS9.Thanks again for the advice ,I'll know better next time.

Hurricane, follow this method exactly:

Go to your Addon Scenery folder
Inside that folder, go into the Texture folder
You will see another Texture folder - click on it with your right hand mouse button & choose the "Cut" option
Go back to the main "Addon Scenery" folder - right click again, only this time choose the "Paste" option
When you get warnings about overwriting ignore them, just click on "Yes for all".

Trust me on this, you will then have a working version of this scenery package.
