As hurricane Irene bears down on the northeast region, it looks like my area will be one of the hardest hit. My wife and I live in southeast Pennsylvania, and our development rests right next to a creek that tends to flood in heavy rain. This, of course, will be one of the worst storms to ever hit our region, and we are prepared for a total disaster.

...I would like to ask my friends and family in the SOH community to please say a prayer for us, that we don't lose everything that we have worked so hard for; And that there will be no loss of life. Our entire region is in serious trouble, and we will need all of the prayers and support we can get.

There are many SOH members in the path of Irene, and please pray for them also, that we may all be safe and make it through this as safely as possible...

I will personally be packing up my gear and making my best attempt at storm-proofing my house today and early tomorrow, so I may not be online for some time, especially if our area loses power. But I am asking for your prayers and support during what looks to be a very difficult test for us...Thank you all in advance. It is much appreciated!

Matt,my thoughts are with you and everyone in this region.
Must be terrible not to know what could happen.
Take care and my best wishes for you, your family and friends.

right down the street from you Matt....I'm worried about my moms place too......here's hoping its not as bad as they say it will be.

My best wishes for you and your family. The nature still rule our lives even though we sometimes tend to forget it. Stay safe.

I will keep praying, and keep the fingers crossed....I appreciate the support, and hope that everyone escapes this difficult situation unscathed. :salute:

We'll all be keeping you in our thoughts and prayers! Good luck and may the Fates be kind.

Prayer Said

Best to you, your family and all that will be affected by this storm. I'll wear my NAS Willow Grove ball cap to send positive vibrations to all in PA. (I'll be weathering the storm just west of DC.)

Andy,

The best of luck to you, along with my prayers for your safety. Up here, it's kind of similar to folks who live on the Outer Banks. That fact that it has not strengthened while over the Gulf Stream is a good sign, and bodes well for the Northeast corridor.

An 85mph category one isn't enough to make people blink, or even come close to evacuating, except for those panicky tourists. I've been through Hurricane Bob and the Perfect Storm, which were both much stronger. Most folks 'round here and the Cape are getting their boats out of the water, getting milk, batteries, and bread, and going back to their homes, not leaving.

My preparations were the same. Other than that, I went down in the basement and made sure everything was at least eighteen inches off the floor, and made sure that the concrete wall that protects my oil furnace and water heater from being snuffed out is intact. I ran my generator to make sure it's ready to go. I also turned off the news and am just listening to the NWS, because the media is making this out to be armageddon or something.

And, it is precisely this level of hyped-up, media bulls*it that makes people ignore warnings when and if the "big one" actually DOES hit.

I'm not really concerned about this one..but down where you are it's a bit of a different story. It's amazing what a ten-degree difference in water temperature makes!

Flooding

I wouldn't worry about the wind too much. It's those 10 inches of rain (and flooding) that I would be worried about. Raising everything up 18 inches is not going to be enough, I don't think. Flooding is more damaging than wind. Stay safe E Coast. It's going to be a doozie.

Matt, with God's good favor I'm sure we all will make it through Hurricane Irene safely, though we may be without power and have a bit of clean-up to do afterwards. I'm just hoping the darn thing honks a right-hand turn in the next 24 hours or so. When Hurricane Isabel hit in 2003 we lost power for 10-11 days. Maybe Virginia Power has stepped up their emergency plan since then, but I doubt it.

Ain't the praying type but I'm rooting for all of you guys out there. I've got friends and coworkers that live near the ocean in a few states.

Hopefully everyone has heeded the warnings and evacuated to safety.

Good luck guys! :salute:
