Guys, gals. You people are so lucky. New models and scenery coming out by the droves. I'm envious of you all. Why? Because I can't even begin to enjoy it. I need a machine that can handle it.

I know I'll get a lot of response. AMD/Intel. Well, I want Intel based.

I've got the itch to buy FSX aircraft so bad right now!!

Please suggest a machine configuration that will handle FSX with maxed sliders. MB, CPU, memory, VC's, the whole shebang

Intel...

Set a price range....

You building, off the shelf, or getting one made for you?

Well I have my own opinions of ASUS...

Can you say gigabyte? LOL

ATI

X48 over X58 ? Perhaps

Just thoughts....

Vista now with the free upgrade offer for Oct. 22...

Some thoughts:

  • EVGA is one brand I would look at for Motherboards, and Video cards...I've had really good luck with them.
  • The i7 920 @ 2.66 Ghz (stock) runs FSX really well for me, Unless you're wanting to really impress the ladies the 920 should suit your needs.
  • Research what you want on Newegg (their reviews are really helpful), post your prospective build here (or in the FSX Guides section) and we'll help from there.
  • Harleyman seems to know what he's doing (or at least acts like it:engel016:), so you've got an excellent resource in him along with Texnetcop.
Good luck!

I just recently upgraded with a Core i7 975, Gigabyte GA-EX58-UDS motherboard, 12GB RAM and Windows7 RC1, after my older system died. I had recently purchased a GTX285. Other than the video card, the new goodies ran about $1800, including a new hard drive. Three grand is more than enough to build what you want.

An i7 system isn't absolutely necessary (it isn't the magic bullet when it comes to FSX and high fps ,fluid gameplay...due to it's "weird" coding)....a good socket 775 system can still cut it with FSX and most other games and will come in at a lot less than your budget leaving you more money to spend on peripherals such as monitors, speakers, joysticks, TrackIR etc:)

So True............FSX gets lost in all those cores....:icon_lol:

I don't know where people get that you need an expensive i7 to run FSX at max settings. Correct BANDWIDTH will get you where you want to go. I wish I could show them the things we have done with FSX and the X48 and P45 boards at TechCorp-but I'm not allowed to publish our results. I do like the i7Core CPUs but it doesn't $2000 plus to get great results! I build and test for a living day in and day out so it isn't like I am new to this. You gain almost nothing in using the GTX 285 over the GTX 260 in FSX-not true for other games though!

I haven't seen performance with the socket 775's like I've seen with the Core i7. You don't need the 950 or the 975, just get the 920 and overclock it....it's not 2k either

I run one of the "Old" systems overclocked and I rarely see my FPS drop below 25-27FPS. I have it locked at 30 FPS.

I believe the secret is in overclocking. I ran the same system at factory presets for a year and would drop in the low teens. The Iris T-6II Version 2 could drop it into single digits.

Once I got above 3.0 GHz things started to fly. I think you need to be at 3.0 GHz or higher to really see FSX fly. The next system I build will be a speed demon.

Hey Ted, I am running with the evga 8800GT 512 mb, been considering a gt 260 or 275, any benefit with my setup or leave it alone?

Ahhhhh YEAH!

You want to have all your components match up so to speak.

A GTX 285 would help you out, your bottleneck at the moment is the definitely the video card.

Just make sure your PSU has two PCIe power connectors for the video card

At least the GTX260. Again, I test this stuff every time I go down to TechCorp, in every conceivable system you can think of. I work with engineers not amateurs. In FSX there is benefit from the 1GB video cards, in other games I like the GTX 285. As has been said many times bandwidth does matter.

FSX is just an odd bird but fun. I also have older Core2Duo rig with the Zotac 8800GT that I use for testing aircraft and scenery before I install it on my system. My wife uses factory OC'd HIS 4850 ICEQ4 for FSX, all of our frames rates (which I have shown here in many pictures) are in the 30s on the old cards even in LA, San Francisco, and New York-be glad to post them all again if need be. Of course all of our systems are OC'd from 3.8 to 4.2.

Have been real happy with the 8800gt, but lately been getting some artifacts that I atribute to the card, seems that it may be having some problems. It is not overheating seldome gets above 50C, have a good cooler and fan and run it full up all the time. Money is tight but would like a 1 gig card. Would like to keep it under $200 dollars if possible. FSX is the only sim. Suggestions?

Are you trying to build one just for FSX or for all your needs. Most of our members have all the sliders to max, traffic, boats, cars,AI at max setting and some have there stuff at super max...and still get over 500 FPS....Now that all the BS has been put upfront. The MB and processor is what cha need to look at along with fast memory....this should solve all your needs for about a month..it takes about that long for the newer stuff to be released.Stop worrying about FPS and just get it to stop shuttering and you will be fine...Mike
