Iceland C-117D Wreck-Finding and Scenic Flight

With the latest freeware Iceland scenery updates released on the MSFS forums yesterday, I decided to take a flight along the southern coast from Reykjavik to Bakki, then to Vik, and finally to Fagurholsmyri. Between Bakki and Vik lies the well-known 1973 wreck of C-117D s/n 17171, which is now depicted with a 3D representation thanks to the freeware addon: https://forums.flightsimulator.com/t/update-8-31-freeware-iceland-overhaul/212134





I did an early detour in the route to check out RAF Kaldadarnes, which was the first airfield built by the British in Iceland during WWII.

From Wikipedia: "The accident aircraft was flying from Hofn Hornafjördur Airport to Naval Air Station Keflavik, after delivering supplies for the radar station at Stokksnes. En-route the aircraft encountered severe icing and the crew were forced to land on a frozen river at Sólheimasandur. All 7 crew members survived and were rescued by helicopter, but the aircraft was written off, (surveyed in USN parlance). The unsalvaged remains of the aircraft were left at the scene."

Today it is a popular tourist destination, and there is an easily discernible path leading out to the wreck.







 


Over a stretch of water I decided to take some close-ups of the 172. It's really interesting to see on these aircraft just how much is actually 3D-modeled now, rather than just textured.
