Idea for ASW...

Part of my upcoming CVE campaign I have several ASW missions which have proven to be challenging and fun. Some involve surfaced submarines, some involve spotting the periscope(using the submerged U9 filling in for IJN subs) and attacking submerged submarine. Wondering if any of the ship buildings out there could create a submarine that is completely submerged with scope down but perhaps leaves a small wake that can be seen from the air.Subs in the pacific could often be seen while submerged pretty deep due to clear waters.Unfortunately the graphics in CFS 2 are not capable of this. This could also play a part in some Atlantic CVE missions I plan to create eventually. I had the idea of using the "invisible tender", changing it to a submarine but not sure how to do the wake part.Suggestions? Thanks.

Do you have any pics of a submerged Sub that could be seen? Is is just a sub shaped blob on the water? With a flat sub shape and alpha layered texture you could make somthing that could look like it was under water.

Your reading My mind...

Allen,

Are you looking over my sholder. I think I need to close the blinds. LOL

I have the stock shj_sub imported into Gmax. I have an Idea for the periscope model. Not sure on the submerged yet.

Ill look and see, based it mostly on the numerous accounts of US WW 2 submarine books(clear the bridge, thunder below, wahoo, etc) that japs could often bee seen in right conditions when at 100-150 feet.Whales were often mistake for submerged subs.I imagine it looked like a large blurr.I will see if can find photos

I do have one hell of telescope and night vison attachment!

That has to be a satelite to see from Cali to Maine.

I have 2 models done up. A new surface model that looks kinda like a Japanese Type-C sub. One is on the surface, the other is at periscope depth. I'm having trouble getting them into the game. I always have troble with the MDLs. Not sure why. BGLS work fine for me.

Allen,

If you want I'll send the Source files to you. I think you have the right idea for the submerged. use a poly that is shaped correctly. remember to set the trans to 99% to remove the shadow.

You can send it to me. Also did you try making a FS2004 mdl or a FS2002 mdl.

Both. they export fine. but they will not convert. I've tried the FS2002 without converting but that didn't work either. I think my MDLC isn't working right.

That did the trick. TY Allen.
I'll test the other model I made and see how it goes.

The fun part will be the fully submerged model. I'm thinking of using the flat poly with the top texture. that will have to be blended to match the water. I don't think the shadow on the water would look right but I can try that too. I wonder if I tried it at depth?

how big would a 100m sub look at 200m in clear water?

Here is what I came up with.

Worked great in my test, will use it for next ASW mission I build in my CVE campaign.About to start work on Mission #17, which will take place on D-DAY plus 2 at Saipan. Mission 18 on morning of D3 will likely be an ASW mission. Thanks again for this sub.

Another thought here....

...didn't TR do this awhile back as a U-Boat? Available over at Simviation.

Sorry if I'm a little late but here's a pic you might be able to use .....

Very nice there Allen!

Looks very like a sub with it's con tower just below the surface.

Cheers
