Install/Reinstall Guide?

strykerpsg

SOH-CM-2023
I did some various searches but found nothing. I thought there was a guide that explained the install sequence of FSX and add ons. I have installed FSX-SE and am hoping to avoid the traffic debacle that plagued my last install a few months back. I had spent the better part of a weekend installing aircraft, scenery and utilities. It all looked great but then I noticed there was NO traffic and it was discussed as being a possible FS9 traffic file conflict. I never was able to resolve it, but ended up buying another computer. This was my opportunity to install the Steam version and give it one more hurrah before possibly switching to P3Dv2...

Anyway, I thought Harleyman or TXNetCop had put a guide out. Any help appreciated.

Thanks

I have this as text from a few years ago and I'm not sure who created the article but here it is. Hope it works for you:

VIII Clean Boot
------------------------------
When you start Microsoft Windows with a normal startup, several programs
start automatically and run in the background. These programs may include
third-party antivirus programs and system utility programs.

When you try to run the game, these programs may interfere with the game.
If this occurs, you can use a clean boot to start your computer before you
play a game. This prevents these background programs from starting
automatically. Hence, we will try reinstalling the game in Clean boot
mode.

NOTE: You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the
Administrators group in order to complete this procedure. If your computer
is connected to a network, network policy settings may also prevent you
from completing this procedure.

1. Click on Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type msconfig, and then click OK.
3. On the General tab, click Selective Startup.
4. Under Selective Startup, click to clear the following check boxes:

- Process SYSTEM.INI File

5. On the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services
check box.
6. On the Startup Tab, click the option "Disable All"

I won't put the posters name here, and apparently these instructions are
from Microsoft Support. I do not remember where I saw this. I wouldn't
want the poster to take any blame if something I cut and pasted here is
incorrect. I haven't had to go through this yet myself, so I don't know
how it works, but I'm certain at some point I probably will. Sooner or
later with FSX... I'll fubar something up, done it before, I'm sure I'll
do it again. And if nothing else it's worth a shot if your contemplating a
complete reformat to see if you can save yourself some time and

Roger,

Thanks for that piece too. Luckily since this is a new HDD and install, I absolutely did not have to tweak with my registry or delete existing folders. Do you have any advice on the order of add on installs, in other words scenery and mesh add one? Do I physically need to start FSX each time after each add on(Orbx, UTX, etc.) to check integrity of the install and whether or not traffic has been deleted or modified? Also, I will do all physical aircraft add one in the end, as they do not necessarily impact traffic files, unless that's an incorrect assumption too.

Thoughts?

Matt

Hi Matt,

With regards to the order of installation of ORBX products check out their website there is loads of information there. I think if I was reinstalling I would add all regions first then start FsX and check that all was good then move on to Global, Vector and then individual airports being carefull to change Central as required.

Great tips Roger. I think when I've re-installed in the past, my impatience got in the way of what would be the right way, and admittedly, Orbx has a huge amount of space on my drive. I am really interested to see how the 4k resolution turns out with all of the aircraft, weather and scenery. Thanks for helping a seasoned guy fumble through his install.
