Installing another instance of CFS3 and add on's.

Hello everyone,

I just joined the forum today, and I'm thrilled by the add on's for CFS3. But I learned quickly that downloading these
add on's are not that simple. I learned from an administrator that I would need to install another instance of CFS3 in order
to mod it to my hearts desire. So my first question is how do I install another instance of CFS3. My second question is,
how do I download add on's to CFS3 such as additional aircraft and such.

Thank You.

Very simple - create a new folder next to your existing CFS3 folder, and copy all the contents into it.

Then go here: http://www.mwgfx.co.uk/

and navigate to CFS3/Utilities. You'll find a tab for "Multi-install" which will lead you to the Beta page. Download MultiCFS3 and go from there.

You may need to go to the graphics tools page and download the DLLs - no idea whether they are needed or not. Meanwhile, there are a few other things to get, such as DXTBmp, which is a useful little tool for modifying dds textures.

Making a second install aof CFS3 is quiet simpel:

1. Install CFS3, apply the updates, run the cfs3config and then run CFS3 once.

1a: If you want to build missions in your addons later on, it's a good idea to install the CFS3 mission builder now, as it will be copied automatically in your future installs.

2. Download Multcfs3 from this link: http://www.mwgfx.co.uk/download/mulcfs3.zip and throw it in your CFS3-folder.

3. Copy the whole CFS3-folder, renaming it the way you want.

4. Within the new folder, run multicfs3.exe and put in a name for the Appdata folders (usually I choose the same name as I chose for the directory)

That's it, more or less. Now you can mod the new copy at your hearts will, your original install stays untouched.

As for installing the bigger mods like ETO, PTO and MAW, there are some nice tutorials about how to install, see in the stickies. But one thing they have all in common: they need a updated but otherwise untouched copy of CFS3 to start with.

Any more questions? Don't be afraid to ask!

Cheers

Edit: Aw, been beeten by a few minutes!

I've thrown the MultiCFS3 app into my Combat Flight Simulator 3 3.0 File (which I copied and placed on my desktop from the original in My Documents) and run the app but a message comes up saying "problem modifying file." What should I do?

Never had that before - no idea.

Meanwhile, I'm not sure your desktop is the best place - it really ought to be in the same Microsoft Games folder as your base install, not that it needs anything from it, but it's just easier to keep track of things. Call it something else (obviously!) so you know which is which...

So you've installed MultiCFS3 into your new CFS3 folder - and run it.

It SHOULD look like this:

It will work regardless of the version of CFS3 you've installed, although Italflyer is absolutely right to remind you to patch to 3.1, with the AC Upgrade and Mission Builder before doing this operation.

I can't think what it could be, unless it's some odd Windows 7 permissions thing...

I think you're copying the wrong folder. The one you want is in Microsoft Games in the Program Files (x86) or Program Files folder. The one in My Documents is created by the sim when it first runs.

Hope this helps.

Yup, like hairyspin pointed out, the CFS3-Program folder, the one with the CFS3.exe in it!

I still receive the same message even when I have copied the CFS3 Folder from Microsoft Games folder, and run the MultiCFS3 in the copied folder. Where should I go from here?

Is there anything odd about your install? I do mean the install itself, not the app data files?

Then: Go into your application data files, look to see what is lurking in the Microsoft Games folder.

In XP, it is here:

C:\Documents and Settings\(your user name)\Application Data\Microsoft\Combat Flight Simulator 3.0

If you find you have two CFS3 sub-folders in this Microsoft folder, delete the one which is not named Combat Flight Simulator 3.0. If you find there is no Combat Flight Simulator 3.0 folder, then move to my next hypothesis:

Actually, you HAVE ALREADY RUN CFS3, haven't you? Because if you haven't run CFS3 at all, none of these folders will be present in the App Data folder, and MultiCFS won't have anything to copy...

What OS? (If it's Win7: right click on multicfs3.exe within the copied program-folder, choose compatibility, set to "run as admin" and "run program in compatibility mode" and choose "WinXP, SP3") [Might be called a little different in the english version, as I'm on a german version of Win7 here] Might be about the same in Win8, but I'm not sure....

Are you running multicfs3 by doubleclicking on it within the copied folder, or from a shortcut outside the folder?

Oh, another suggestion: try to move new CFS3folder to somewhere outside the X86program folder, like C:\games\....
