Installing Gerrish Gray's FS2000/2002 trees into CFS2

Roxane-21

SOH-CM-2023
Hi.

In order to get Ajax' EFTO sceneries working, I have to install Gerrish Gray's FS2000/2002 'trees_v3'.
This file can be found at Simviation: https://simviation.com/1/download?file=trees_v3.zip&fileId=24269

This is what Gerrish Gray's 'ReadMe' says:

Unzip the contents of the file SCENERY.ZIP into your main <fs####>\scenery
folder. This installs a single file called trees_0.bgl that contains all
the tree objects. The same file works correctly with either FS2000 or
FS2002.

Now, if you are using FS2000, unzip the contents of FS2000.ZIP into your
main <fs2000>\texture folder, or if you are using FS2002 unzip FS2002.ZIP
instead and put its contents in the main <fs2002>\texture folder. Either
will install 65 tree_*.bmp and conifer_*.bmp files. The FS2000 versions
can actually be used with either Flight Simulator version, whereas the
improved FS2002 versions use the DirectX compressed DXT1 format and are not
compatible with the older FS2000. Incidentally, the newer textures not
only look better, they should also give a small improvement in frame rates.

Note that no entry is required in the Scenery Library database
(scenery.cfg).

Because the library uses 'section 10' objects, the trees will automatically
be found by any scenery that uses them. If you are using FS2000 and
previously installed an older version of the library, you may have put it
in a special folder within the <fs2000>\scenedb structure, with its own
entry in scenery.cfg
. This is fine for FS2000, and you could put the
replacements there too if you wish, but this method of installation does
NOT work satisfactorily with FS2002, which seems to have a different method
for finding textures associated with library files, and may display the
trees as untextured white "boards" if the texture bitmaps are not found the
main fs2000\texture folder.

Now, I am trying to install them into CFS2... This makes me wonder:

> May I put 'trees_0.bgl' into CFS2 main 'Scenery' folder and the BMPs into CFS2 main 'Texture' folder ?
> May I put them all into a new 'Scenedb/Trees' folder ? Then will I have to activate this as a new scenery in CFS2 ?
> May I put them into CFS2 'Scenedb/Inf/Scenery' and 'Scenedb/Inf/Texture' folders ?

> Which texture set will work better for CFS2 ? The FS2000 set or the FS2002 one ?

I could try these solutions and see which one works but I am out for now and your answers will save me time and effort when I will be back home.

You should be able to use FS2002 install instructions just fine. DXT1 format works in CFS2 so you should be able to use FS2002 textures as well.

Hi Roxane,

Put the .bgl file in the Scenedb/Inf/Scenery folder and the textures in the main TEXTURE folder. You can put the textures in the Scenedb/Inf/Texture folder and they will work. However, sometimes the textures may be needed for other authors' scenery. I find putting as many textures as possible in the main TEXTURE folder covers most contingencies.
