For better or worse, My machine which was very recently built has a Vista32 operating system. I am experiencing great difficulty in getting OFF2 to install properly, let alone run. I have heard that some people have successfully got Vista32 machines to work and 64bit ones as well. Can anybody what is their secret as I would really like to get some quality air time in as OFF3 appears to be still some way off. I have read all the information that I can that is on the FAQ'S, which to be honest is not a lot as far as Vista is concerned. Can anyone help.....please?

Try reading some of the STICKY's Dealing with Vista, hope you find some help there because, what you see, is what you get. They've remained that way for quite awhile allready :ernae:

I can't remember the exact detail and the post is now lost in the ether of the great crash, I can't even remember who posted the solution for you to PM them!!!

I *think* it went something like this:

you need to remove all trace of OFF from your machine.
Install CFS3, patch and fly a quick flight.

Switch off and restart the machine in safe mode
Install OFF phase 2
Restart the machine as normal
ensure that the game will run as admin and XP compatability.

Play game and fly

Now my memory aint great, but it was something like that. Sorry I can't help more.

Let us know if any of that garbage helps you out!

Found it!!

Install OFF on Vista Machines Redaux...A better way!
After installation of CFS3 and CFS3 patches and running CFS3:

Restart computer in safe mode (Hold down F8 key during startup).

Right click on each OFF installer icon; select "Run as Administrator" and install each section in order (Phase 2 release, skins, video, updates).

You will receive an error message stating the "OLEAUT32.dll" will not register. Close the error message box buy clicking the "X" in the upper right corner and allow the installation to proceed.

Restart computer in regular mode (reboot).

Goto the CFS3 folder, find the CFS3.exe icon, right click to select properties and set compatability to "Windows XP".

Goto the CFSWWI Over Flanders Fields folder and set the OFFmanager.exe and shell.exe to "WindowsXP" compatibility as you did to CFS3.exe.

Restart computer in "Safe" mode (F8) and runn OFF. OFF should initilize. Exit OFF and restart in regular mode.

OFF should now run with out any problems under the Vista operating system. Using "Safe" mode to install and initilize bypasses processes and services that interfer with the proper placement and copying of files.

I would like to thank "wisicu" for the tip on using "Safe" mode.

P.S. So far there is no "Hang on exit bug".

Hope it helps somebody, as I said it worked for me

Cheers

In my Vista computer, I installed OFF withour resorting to safe mode. As per Polovski's instructions I set all OFF installer exes to run in XP compatibility mode and run them as administrator in the correct order. I then set up offmanager.exe to run in XP comatibility mode. All is well and the only thing I get is an error message at start of the OFF manager which I just ignore.

Hi , Well I have had some success, not complete, but a stepin the right direction. I tried running OFF2 as 'administrator ' in normal mode and was able to enter the workshop and create a pilot, however when I tried to do a quick flight the game crashed. I will explore the FAQ'S , something to do with common.dll, and shell.exe........ but it is a start. If anyone is familiar with fault occurring when you try to start a QF I'd appreciate some quidence.

I have OFF running in Vista 64 and initially had problems like yours. It turned out to be 2 Program Folders in explorer. The one followed by (86) is the Vista 64 folder. The other is the Vista 32 folder.

The OFF install was defaulting to the wrong Program folder (i.e. Vista 32), which was why OFF had problems running.

I just changed the default install location for OFF to the (86) folder (Vista 64) during the install process and it did the trick.

Just a thought :kilroy:

Hi, I am getting whats being called an APPCRASH when I try to start a Quick combat, the Appliicatin name is Shell.exe, and the Fault module name is COMMON.DLL . I haven't been able to find any mention of this fault in the FAQ's has anyone else experienced any problems like this?

I am hoping that I have got down to the last problem. I need to install a .dll file into my Vista32 system. It's called common.dll but when I try to install windows/system I get an access denied boxappear although I am the system administrator. The error message when I try to start a Quick combat says that this .dll file is the cause of the fault, but on searching the windows/system and windows/system32 files its not there at all. Any ideas would be a help.

Not sure if this is the answer (I am on XP), but I would try installing the .dll while in safe mode. Press F8 when Windows loads.

Just a shot. Hope it works.

common.dll is sitting in your OFF installed folder.
Sounds to me that you need to install OFF using "Run as Administrator" option and set to XP compatibility on the installer exe.

And then set the installed OFF Manager to also "Run as Administrator" and set to XP compatibility

Yes, the common.dll file IS where you said it was(I thought it would be in system32) Are you saying that I will need to completely reinstall OFF again from scratch in order set it in XP COMPATIBILITY mode? Not that it matters that much as I'm starting to get the hang of it.Thanks Pol for the advice, I feel as if I am getting closer.

Dunno you can try changing the offmanager to run in compatibilty mode, if it doesn't work reinstall ?

Hi Pol, I am very pleased to report that I have just completed my first Quick Combat having followed your advice in setting my OFF manager to XP compatibilty mode. I did not have to reinstall , Thanks for your help.

Fandabbydozey! Yeehaaa and Congratulations!!!!!!!!!
