The series of extreme-performance CPUs has been widen with a Intel Core i7-990X Extreme Edition, produced using 32nm process technology. The new processor, has an unlocked multiplier which is highly evaluated by hardware enthusiasts and overclockers.

All six core of Core i7-990X run at 3,46 GHz, while its 3,33 GHz for its predecessor — Core i7-980X. CPU supports multi-thread technologies, comes with 12MB of cache and can reach 3.73 GHz in Turbo Boost mode. The TDP value for Core i7-990X is 130W.

The same time the new flagship CPU was released, Intel has dropped prices for earlier models Core i7-960 and i7-970 clocked at 3,2. That is, Intel Core i7-960 quad-core CPU with 8MB of L3 cache and made using 45nm process logic, got cheaper almost twice, from $562 to $294 which now puts it in price comparative segment with Intel Core i7-2600. The last is $20 more expensive, though. Concerning six-core Core i7-970 processor with 12MB of L3 cache, it price went down by $302 to $583.

crap...it figures, after I just get my i7 980x rig put together.

edit: I just did a little checking, and there doesn't seem to be any difference between the two except for the factory clock speed it comes with and the cache.

I7 2800K on the verge of release and more price drops to come for the i7 800 series and 1156 motherboards...

There's never a good time to build/buy ,Bone, as there's always something newer on the horizon. :)

How's the 980x rig going for ya...installed FSX yet?

If you want....and as it's old technology now....I'll take the complete build off your hands for $100 and a half eaten Mars bar????!!!! :d ;P

FSX not installed yet, and I really love that new rig smell.

You're a tough negotiator...$100/half eaten Mars bar...I love Mars bars! OK, you have a deal. The shipping will be approximately $3200.

Hey I'll throw in two uneaten Mars bars and a dozen peanut butter cups...how about it? You pay the shipping though

Intel does not tell anyone outside of the marketing dept when or if they will drop their prices until they actually just do it. They want you to pay current retail prices until the number of sales of their processors takes a drop.
