First: The 24 part series on the Cold War from its start to the end.

Part one of the first episode is here:

Other parts can be accessed via "Related Videos", other episodes by entering "cold war [number of desired episode]of24" into Youtube's search.

This monster of a documentary series tells the whole story from nearly all sides. Very informative and very well made!

Second: Wings Of Russia.

An eighteen episode series covering russian aviation from the beginning till 2008. The commentary is in english but with a strong russian accent. It takes some getting used to, but it's well worth it! You'll hear and see things about russian aircraft that you didn't know before. I promise!

First episode, part one of five:

Again., other parts can be accessed via "Related Videos", other episodes by entering "wings of russia [number of desired episode]of18" into Youtube's search.

If you've got the time to spare, watch both of 'em! Even if you think you know everything about the cold war and russian aviation!

BBC's "Planet Earth" on Blu-Ray is an amazing series I highly recommend to anyone.

Close on that list is BBC's "Blue Planet" if you like oceans and such.

Bjoern,
You are correct sir those are good documentaries, and you are also correct in that I saw some Russian stuff I had never even heard of. Good find.

Best find in ages for me in terms of information density. I'm seriously thinking about getting myself a pack of DVD-Rs and store both series permanently.
