Interesting Find Using 2020 Repaints and Sim Freezes

FAC257

SOH-CM-2025
As mentioned earlier, I went for a clean re-install of 2024. Part of the motivation was that right after the new update I couldn't get any flights to start. After hitting "Start Flight", it would go to the aerial view but would never zoom down to the "Ready To Fly" stage.

With me being extra careful with this fresh re-install I may have discovered something interesting that wasn't there before the update. All went well with installing the MSMP Compatible listed aircraft and scenery. Then I loaded all my 2020 payware aircraft and sceneries. With all of that in I was able to make several uneventful full flights. The problem appeared when I went to start installing some of the 2020 repaints I had been using prior to the latest update. After loading in a few, I went to go make an actual flight and things were right back to hanging at the aerial view and never getting to an aircraft. Since it started with the first flight after loading in the repaints, I pulled all of them out, and things were back to normal and not hanging at the aerial.

After seeing that, I started putting in the repaints one by one and testing. I ended up with a few usable non-hanging 2020 repaints and almost my entire library of other 2020 repaints causing the hang.

The most interesting discovery was that a single hang causing repaint will also cause the sim to hang at the aerial view even if the aircraft you are trying to use is an entirely different aircraft than the one with the bad repaint. I tested this many times taking repaints in and out to make sure I was reasonably sure of this, with 100% predictable results every time.

So, it appears that something changed with the new 2024 update in how it looks at non-2024 repaints.

Do your repaints have the 'use for AI aircraft' option (canBeUsedByAITraffic)?
If so try setting it off?
I deleted all of the ones that caused the hang from my master MSFS folder. I'll hook up the external drive with the backups this evening and take a look.

Thanks,
Forest

Maybe you could have a look at this?

I did see that earlier, but 'm not sure I want to go that route just yet.

Thinking about that a bit more....
That could be a reason that a single non-compliant texture would hang the whole sim, even if not trying to fly the aircraft with the "bad" texture. MSFS would logically look at all the aircraft to see which it needs to load as AITraffic. When it comes across that file, it says nope.

Not easy to use the word "logically" when referring to MSFS2024. 😀

I saw on another discussion board last night that problems that are occurring with a great many 2020 repaints in MSFS 2024 can be easily solved simply by regenerating a new Layout.json file. I haven't tried it yet, but plan to with my Carenado Beech 18 repaints which aren't working properly in 2024.

With the same tool that is present in so many 2020 repaints?

Yes, either MSFSLayoutgenerator.exe or the one I use, auto_json.exe. Just place it in the root folder of the repaint (the folder inside your community folder), and run the program, generating a new Layout.json file. MSFS 2024 has become very strict about reading the file sizes recorded in the Layout.json file, and if they don't match the file size of the textures called upon, those textures aren't loaded in the sim and might even cause the sim to crash.

I just ran a test of this, and sure enough just by creating new Layout.json files, all of my 2020 Carenado Beech 18 repaints, which became problematic in 2024, are now working just fine.
I tried this out yesterday. It definitely worked for some the repaints on some aircraft. But only on about half the aircraft & repaints I tried it on. A good step tho.

Thanks
Forest.

I just tried Auto_Jason on a FlightsimTO 2020 airport scenery that wouldn't show in 2024, and it worked.

When I originally installed the FTO airport, it didn't crash or hang MSFS2024, but when it finally ended up on the runway in an aircraft, it was the default airport. After running Auto_Jason, the airport was all there.
