iPhone and iPod Touch; Tips and Tricks

Lionheart

SOH-CM-2014
Hey all,

I have been learning more about these wild little units. I thought I would share some findings on them, some tips and tricks.

MMS (texting) can 'send photos'. In case you didnt know, yes, you can send photos with text messages. Note that there is a small camera icon on your little typing window slot, left side. Click that to enter a photo from your Photos library. You can also manually Paste in a photo from your library and that will send at full size. Thus if you have a 1000 by 800 size picture you have uploaded into your iPhone or iPod, you can go to your library, bring up the photo, hold your finger on it until a 'Copy' window tab appears. Click Copy. Then open MMS and open your chat text link with a friend, and click on the typing slot (hold finger on it) until the 'Paste' tab appears, and click Paste. The photo pops up into the typing zone above. Add some text and click Send and your photo is sent 'full size' to your friend or family member.

Taking pictures. There are lots of tips on this. Mainly one that people never really knew about was that your lense should be extremely clean. Note that most of us keep our phones in our pockets and that has tons of lint. If you look very closely at your lense, you should see fine dust on it. Maybe even a oily finger print from holding your iPhone. Clean it really well if you want a nice pic.

Also, try leaning against something when taking a photo. If your camera is super still, your picture resolution will be massivley nicer. (Yep...)

There is an App out for taking night photos. It adds a longer exposure duration for capturing low level light and works quite well for not having a flash.

There are a couple of timer camera Apps also that have unique, adjustable timers in them for taking pictures where you do not want to be holding the camera. One has repeats, like one ever second, 20 seconds, etc. Great for a pic of you and your honey standing beside the Grand Canyon, the iPhone leaning against a tree branch or large rock.

Screen 'Screen grab' or 'Screenshot of your iPhone screen.' This is a popular thing with Mac's and they incorporate this into the iPhone. If you see something while you are online, or someone says something, or you want to save a phone number that is shown on your phone and you are in a hurry, you can grab a screenshot of your phones screen by holding down the round front Home button 'and' the top right 'Off/On' button. Hold them down both at the same time, then let go. The screen turns white, a camera shutter sound is heard (crickie crickie) and Voila.. Screenshot. Go to your Photos / Camera Roll to locate it at the back of the stack.

Awesome Notes; This is a cool and VERY unique program for all that are notes freaks. You can;

* Backup your notes to a freeware Google mail account
* Create folders with choice of about 10 or 15 color choices of folders
* Select background paper themes for notes (again, perhaps 15 versions)
* Select an icon for the folder (again, about 15 or 20 or more choices)
* Copy/paste abilities
* Select Font type and even Font size...!
* Import and export your notes to and from your Gmail (Google Mail) account. (This can be done swiftly as well. Go to Gmail, paste in a huge document or recipe, plane configs, etc, then paste into a new Google Document, then save. Go to iPhone, open AwesomeNote, click Import, and locate your Doc at your Gmail account.

I am probably missing a few things on this unique program. I highly recommend it. I think its still $4.00 and I use it every day. Only for guys that are PDA freaks and need a Notes program.

Arranging App Icons on your iPhone and iPod Touch with the new OS 3.1 and new iTunes 9.0. Yes, you can now arrange your Apps in Windows iTunes or Mac iTunes now. Much easier (for some reason) then in iPhone itself. You can then divide things into pages, such as games, reference programs like translators, Google Earth, etc, then another with your faves (primary Apps for first page). You can also change out your bottom 'main' Apps. You can have just 1 or 2, or all 4 in place, any that you use the most.

Now, with iTunes 9, you can add on movies and Podcasts and TV shows 'specifically'.... Yes..! Finally. Before, you had to have ALL Podcasts or none at all. Now you can 'choose and select' which ones you want on your iPhone / iPod. (I loaded up SG-Universe (free download at iTunes) to see if it would go into my iPhone. Works awesome! ).

Side note at iTunes. They have a free muisc giveaway once a week, available all week. New releases are on Tuesday mornings, usually 2 songs, one video, and one latino song. The last 2 weeks before have been awesome. (Havent checked the latest). Hint. You can create a quick Playlilst and drag and drop your free music in there. Great for listening to new stuff. Delete if you like. I call my free music list 'Free Tuesday Tunes'.

Remote! Apple has a 'Remote' system built into OS3x. This works only with other Apples (Macs). Its pretty cool if you have several in the house. For instance, Apple TV, a laptop in the bedroom, a iMac in the office. You turn on your free Remote App, sync it with your other Macs, then they all commumicate through WiFi in the house. Simply activate your Remote, if your other computer is on, link to it. Then turn on Front Row, turn on some tunes, play a TV show (SG Universe for instance) while not even getting up from your seat, perhaps while even in the middle of a phone conversation!

Oh.. Did you know that you can turn off your window when talking on the iPhone? Yep. First, it will get rid of the phone selection buttons and show the persons photo you are talking too. (You do attach photos of your family and friends to your Contacts, right??? ). When on the phone, if you want to play a game, run an app, etc, during a phone call, you would click the Home button to clear the screen, then bring up a new App, like Notes, MapQuest, Google Earth (directions for instance), looking up a phone number for another friend, etc..

Its wild what all you can do with these things. They are literally a laptop computer that is smaller then a wallet...

Please add anything to this that you have discovered about these...

Oh.. When taking a photo, remember, you can hold down the photo grab button for as long as you want. The shutter doesnt 'click' until you let go. This allows you a moment to really setup the shot and get extra still.

Another...

For those that have photos that turn out a bit dark or too bright, etc, there is a new App out called Perfectly Clear by Authentic Imaging. This app is pretty much like a basic Adobe Photoshop. This thing has Exposure (dark / light), sharpness, Tint, and many other settings that you can tune on your photos. You can then save in full size or 600 X 400 size resolutions. These save as a new photo, so you still have your original.

oops.. One more cool App. This is from AutoDesk who also own Max. Its called SketchBook Mobile and is a drawing application (2D) and has things like airbrush, paintbrush, etc. Very cool program, though you can only do so much with a pallet the size of your wallet, lol. For me, painter, dev, its a must to just have, lol.. I havent really used it, but if I were stuck in a winter cabin, I would probably use the heck out of it if not able to get to a computer. The work is saved in your photos section of your iPhone / iPod Touch.

and a lot more...

Hey ChaCha,

Cool.. Thanks for the info. I didnt know that about Google Search. I'll look for that. I have Google Earth. You can work the 'Earth' by tilting the iPhone, lol..

For Notes on Google Gmail, just sign up for a free Google mail account. Then, click on Documents. There, you will find a built in word processor that Google has. I believe it may be TXT format, not sure. Its pretty interesting. From there, you can then send/recieve docs to and from your iPhone. Easy... Once you get your account setup.

Concerning rebooting, this helps with the camera also. Sometimes my camera will not focus good. I found that rebooting it will cause the focus system to clear up.
