Iranian F-14 Tomcats In The Iraq-Iran War 1980

I came across this on Youtube but I am sure you have all seen it. I am amazed that the Iranian
Air Force can keep the F-14 in operation today.

I was deployed to the Persian Gulf in 1985 and one of my duties was writing reports from our monitoring of the Iran-Iraq air war over the gulf. On any given day we saw more activity from IRIAF F-4's than F-14's. However, whenever the F-14's headed in the direction of an Iraqi air strike against the Khark Island oil terminal or other target, the Iraqi jets wrapped it up and bugged out real quick. The Iraqis were very gun-shy of any possible contact with the Tomcats.

Yep. Apparently a big frustration for the US Navy Tomcat pilots in Desert Shield, the instant that an Iraqi pilot found himself lit up by the AWG-9 they made for the hills at speed, so they never got to have a crack at them. Ended up doing mainly escort duties and TARPS missions, not happy bunnies at all.

What good is a weapons system without the weapon? ;)

I think the Iranians still have some and even upgraded them a bit.
