Is the Dream Really Dead?

Well, is it? Why would MS be advertising for this position if it were?
My informed opinion is that MS has simply decided to "clean the slate" and rebuild a team centered on MS's long-term goals...
Note the bolded text below to put at rest any supposition that it will be an "XBox360" title...

Job Title: Art Management

"Join the team responsible for building the most fun and rewarding flying experiences available on Games for Windows Live. Does working on a small, innovative team that delivers the most immersive flight experiences available today on the PC intrigue you? Our technology makes available entire continents - potentially the entire planet - for a detailed and dynamic 3D experience. We are looking for a Project Art Lead who can define, refine, and extend the visual elements while balancing the need for fun and approachability for a broad set of users."

The part that still sends chills down my back is this line:

I can forsee a future where MS turns the flight simulator into an online "experience" and forgoes the stand alone aspect of the sim....an Aces High without bullets basically. Which would be a total waste of band width and programming as far as I am concerned...which is what I think of Aces High.

OBIO

So I would say, "Don't throw away those copies of FS9 or FSX, boys and girls..." Perhaps it's just the paranoid in me, but I wouldn't be surprised if MS is trying to find a way to make money off things we can do for free at the moment.

I suppose it's inevitable that there will always be those who simply must see the worst in a rainbow... :faint:

Why the concern? Every title currently available is purchased on a CD or DVD, and may be used off-line if the user wishes... :faint:

well, many folks, myself included, are not intertested in flying online everytime we want to use the sim. especially these days when there are bandwidth caps on our usage.
if you are right, and they just wanted "clean the slate as you say, it was a horrible way to reward a team who consistently put out a complex money making project. certainly not someone i would want to work for.
so, where exactly is the silver lining in this cloud? i want to see it too. :faint:

Did you not read reply #5? Every PC LIVE title to date may be played solo, i.e., off-line...

...why suppose the future sim would not be just the same? :caked:

Games for Windows Live is a shell for selected Windows games- it doesn't force you to play online with others. It only means you need use your Gamertag/ Live Passport to sign in. It's no different from logging onto a forum, except it logs on when you want to play. You don't have to be online though, for it all works if you are offline...

.. in the same way that 360 Live works. I've had my 360 offline for months and I'm still quite capable of playing every game I have, offline, without any troubles.

As Bill says, I think this is just an indication that things are continuing. If MS are to be expected to continue the FS series then I think it goes without saying that they will label it with their current badges and make it conform with every other entertainment product they are putting out.

:friday:

Thing is they could have made that switch without letting Aces go.

That's the part that seems curious to me. Bravo if MS is taking a new and more dynamic strategic approach to PC gaming, but surely the people at Aces were capable of 'rebooting'? A new manager or director could have molded the team to suit a new directive, no? Airlines don't fire their aircrew every time they get a new type of aircraft, do they?

Seriously people, would we really believe ANYTHING coming out of MS these days??
I agree with Mike, the Aces Team could handle this sort of thing, and considering their fate, who would sign on?
