Is the Mosquito the greatest plane ever.....

Reply...

Fibber,

I would argue it's a testament to Geoffrey DeHavilland's vision and perseverance to build a plane he knew would be an asset despite the lack of an official order. When the brass saw it fly and its potential capabilities using materials that would be easier to get (wood) outstrip the traditional metal machines...DeHavilland was proven correct.

The Mosquito is arguably one of the most magnificent examples of piston powered aircraft ever produced, and one of the most beautiful. If I had three wishes I would spend one on just a single flight in the "Stinger" and the second on the Hornet. I still cannot decide which is more sexy, gorgeous and flat out breath taking.

IMHO the Hornet is possibly one of the most beautiful aircraft every constructed, rivaling the D-17 and a handful of other stunners coming from the golden age of aviation and internal combustion development.

I'd give a qualified "yes". The Mossie more than proved itself as the war's most versatile and combat capable aircraft, but I don't know if I'd want to go one-on-one in her in a lengthy, intense furball with a large number of enemy single-engined fighters. Certainly she could hold her own, but I think there were other aircraft better suited to point defense (Spitfire, Tempest) or escort (Mustang). As an offensive weapon, the Mosquito's forte was as a rapid, deep penetration strike aircraft: fly low, fly fast, hit damn hard were you needed to, then get the hell out. And her other duties as Pathfinder, light bomber, strategic recce, and night fighter certainly showed she was without peer.

Would've been interesting to see how long the Luftwaffe campaign during the Battle of Britain would've lasted if the RAF had had the Mossie available to go after the German bombers; probably would've shortened the European war by a year or more!
