Ito's Fury....is there a flight dynamics update?

OBIO

Retired SOH Admin
Has anyone done a new set of file to get Ito's FJ-1 Fury flying better? I have had this vintage Navy jet installed for some time, but just now took it for its first flight...and I felt like a martini...shaken, shaken a lot. And the speed was super crazy.

OBIO

Try this one. My approach is a bit back door-ish but the outcome seems ok. By that I mean I have no special software to do this, its all CFG manips. I worked on the contact points, engine output, inertias, added working flaps with an extra notch, a flight dynamics parameter set, a "ballast" for trim requirements, angled the panel view down a bit so you can just barely see the cables for carrier landings (downside is a bit less sky to see when S&L) but the panel was so huge it seemed reasonable.
It seems the CG is right over the main gear so getting those points to visually work was impossible without the plane squatting on its tail bone. Takeoff roll with one notch flaps is about 130, landing speed dirty is about 120, top speed S&L about 550. Literature says top speed is 600+. I think it is better but I may just be tweaking to my older stick. Let me know what you think. Can't upload so here it is.

Ok, loaded this into the cfg. . .loaded the aircraft onto the deck of the Eisenhower and it proceeded to sit back on it's exhaust. I suspect something isn't right here, lol. Gonna overwrite with the original cfg for now.

Yeah I know it did that to me too at first-DOH, but when I thrust it level it works fine the rest of the time. As I said I like the visual of having the wheels match up with the dirt kick and also not having them lift off the ground when rotating. The original has them way back but it sits on the ground. I'll move them back some more but it will just mean more aft trim to rotate. It'll just have to look and taxi a bit off. Copy these lines into the contact point entry and she'll stop her begging.

Gentlemen,

I would also like to recommend some changes to help with this issue:

In the Airplane Geometry section:
wing_pos_apex_lon=2.100000

This sets CoG at 27% MAC.

Contact Points for gear only:

point.0=1, 15.7, 0.00, -7.25,1574, 0.00, 0.68, 45.78, 0.3, 2.00, 0.80, 5.00, 5.00, 0.00,0.00,0.00

point.1=1, -1.75,-8.00, -6.95,1574, 1.00, 0.61, 0.00, 0.63, 2.00, 0.39, 7.00, 7.00, 2.00,0.00,0.00

point.2=1, -1.75, 8.00, -6.95,1574, 2.00, 0.61, 0.00, 0.63, 2.00, 0.39, 5.00, 5.00, 3.00,0.00,0.00

This really improves suspension, changes the size of the nose wheel from tiny to normal, and loads the aircraft in the sim at the proper pitch and height. The nose gear had 1" of suspension (way too hard) and the main gear were a bit hard. Unfortunately, very little nose gear suspension is animated in th evisual model so you will have to tolerate a little nose sink under hard braking but it is worth it.

At the bottom of the contact point section, change to these:
static_pitch=2.200000
static_cg_height=6.7500000

The flaps could use a little more lift but I would prefer to do that in the air file (and will if you like).

I hope this helps.

I ALWAYS like the help so pardon if I milk this a little.

CoG at 27% MAC. Is this Center of Gravity or Center of Lift, and what is MAC?

static_pitch=2.200000, static_cg_height=6.7500000. What do these lines affect?

I really appreciate the learning I get at SOH!

CoG is normally set at 25% of the Mean Aerodynamic Wing Cord (or 25% rearward of the wing's leading edge; usually the thickest part of the wing). This is not always CoL but in FS, it is usually the same. Actually you can control CoL to be different and if slightly rearward, would give you a faster setup although with a little nose trim necessary.

Static Pitch is the body Angle of Attack sitting on the ground. This is how FS loads the aircraft initially so it should be set so that all gear is equidistant from the surface so you do not have a bouncing fore-aft load.

Static height is the distance from the ground to the reference point and determines how the aircraft will load in the sim, or the height at which the aircraft will lift when in SLEW mode.

You should set this at 1-4 inches above ground with gear "compressed" at static compression, or at ground level with gear "hanging". If too high, the aircraft falls to the surface, if too low, the aircraft will spring into the air (especially if static pitch is way off you will get a fore/aft bounce).

Milton

I know you are busy with other projects and that annoying thing called everyday life, but if you would do up a nice air and config file combo for Ito's Fury, I will name the very next pet I bring home after you (can't have kids, so a pet in named after you is the best I can offer_.

OBIO

I can make a few adjustments for you to the flap lift and drag (already changed and tested) and playing with moving the CoG reference forward and then adjusting all other related stuff. This is done but still unhappy with some things. I am not much on fighter jets but this has some qualities in the air; I just dislike the ground ops.

FM is ready for ya OBIO ... check your PM's.

Much improvement in ground ops, v2, and approach lift and drag.
