yesterday was "girl's day" or the "doll festival" it is a tradition in japan to give the dolls to a grandaughter just after she is born. they are then displayed every year at the time of march 3rd-ish to ensure that she is eventually married and does not become an old maid. (they can't be left out too long or she will be married late)

the set we have here is more modern than traditional, as it does not contain all 7 tiers with the full emporer's court, and the emporer is displayed on your left. if you look on the right, you will see a wooden plaque shaped like a fan. this is a music box that plays the traditional song. it's pretty, i wish i could play it for you. but anyhow, it's neat to look at, and i thought maybe you guys might like to see some pics. i'm not much of a photographer, but you can still see them:
