Jay Leno's Garage - B 17 Flying Fortress

FSX68

Banned
Jay Leno interviews actual WW2 crew members of the B-17 plus a tour of the plane itself. Very well done.

The difference between men and boys is the price of their toys:

A video of a 19 foot long RC model of a B-17. I think this was filmed in Austria. At the end of the video they celebrate with what else,
brewskies. Maybe some of you that sprechen Deutsch can help translate with the conversations at beginning and end.

Both segments are very cool, but I have to say, the maiden(?) flight of that VERY expensive model was something to see!

I too have craweled around in Nine O Nine and it's a wonderful aircraft. The Collings Foundation does a great job. I was unaware of Jay Leno's series here, so thanks so much for posting that. I've subscribed now.

I never cease to be amazed at the dedication of people. That 19 foot RC model is very impressive indeed. I wonder why though he chose two bladed propellers for it? I wonder if he just had a very hard time finding good looking three bladed props that would look right?

I also noticed that the first flight did have a mishap. The number three engine shut down during the flight. I'm sure it made the nerves even more frayed given the craftsmanship that went into the construction.

Same here as well as a B-24 and B-25. What really amazed me is how small and cramped it was. Can't imagine flying in one and being shot at.

Three bladed props require bigger motors, or much smaller diameter in R/C sizes. Yes, even the size being flown here. Also, in these smaller sizes, they are not as efficient. He may change after the plane is "proven" and well learned.

The dead engine on a 4 engine ship, as long as it is an inside one, is only barely noticed, unless flying at full throttle. He did a beautiful job with it.

These are not comfortable planes....everything is designed to poke you, gouge you, destroy your shins.....:icon_lol:
