Jet Noise

I haven't been by Whidbey for a few years.
so Paul, is that big sign still at the front gate?

PARDON OUR NOISE
IT'S THE SOUND OF FREEDOM

if you guys want to talk about jet noise;
how about standing in your living room
looking out the picture window, holding your infant son
and having an EA-6B go over your head at about 300-500 feet.
then crashing about a mile or 2 away.
that my friends, will definitely get your attention.

Grumman EA-6B ICAP II Prowler
c/n P99/P102
161777 (VAQ-129) crashed 10 mi E of Sequim Dec 13, 1984. Crew ejected.

... From there it is easy. If you are Navy or Marines, you do nothing more but let it slam onto the runway. If you are USAF you take pity on the airplane and flare slightly just before touchdown. Keep the nose up until 80-100 kts and the nose wheel will then come down on its own....

Flare?! Whats that? :d I like watching Air Force jets land, they do this "aero breaking" business as they roll out after touch down. Looks cool. Ok, four second interval for the break. I was close. I wonder if the interval is different for the same type aircraft, for different situations? It seems I've seen intervals be longer and shorter, at different times.

I haven't seen that sign, but that doesn't mean it isn't there. I'll look for it!

VAQ-129 is still here. Training squadron for the EA-18G. They're the folks we work with here, and the wing (VAQWINGPAC)

Sorry Ken but that sounded like an oversized lawnmower. ;)

As a former Certified Lawn and Garden Mechanic I will respectfully disagree with you. It Doesn't even come close to a lawnmower sound. :icon_lol:

Dem's fightin' words! :icon_lol:

Besides, how many 200 mph lawnmowers have you ever seen! Huh!!! Huh!!! :)

Ken

Ken we had a customer who took an old Bolens Garden Tractor and put a 350 Chevy engine in it. It was one of those for ever projects that when it was done worked great.

I am not sure what the power out put was but you didn't need to come out of idle to cut the grass.

OK, say this below just like the warden in Cool Hand Luke ....

What we have here is ... failure ... to appreciate .... appreciate GA! :icon_lol:

That's OK, I just got back from rehacking my night currency in both of my "oversized lawn mowers!"

I never had half that fun mowing my lawn, and I've got a John Deere tractor for that! :engel016:

Cheers,

Ken

During the late 80's I lived in the Married Quarters on the base at Winnipeg. They are on the West side of the field and just South of the Air Canada maintenance hanger. During the winter when the air is soupy at -40 the sound of JT-8s screaming during engine runs would rattle the house windows. All the traffic overhead was never a problem but the 727 would shake, rattle, and howl the neighbourhood. Thankfully the 'Bus came along with it's CFM-56s.
