Jimmie vs "The King": Are They Comparable?

I find it really difficult to make such comparisons. Look at the technology and the vast sums of money that support the modern team. That stuff was not available to the teams of the past and I think it makes a big difference. Is Jimmie a more aggressive driver than Richard? He may well be. If Jimmie hits the wall at Daytona doing 180 mph, he is very likely going to walk away with bumps and bruises. Back in Richard's day, hitting the wall at 180 mph was pretty much a death sentence. If Jimmie gets loose at 180 mph, he goes sideways a bit and might be able to recover and continue on. Back in Richard's day, getting loose at 180 mph likely meant a meeting with a wall or at least the car going through the grass and damage being done. I just don't think you can make truly accurate comparisons. It's like comparing a 1970 Mustang with a 2010 Mustang. Yes, they are both Ford Mustangs, both look good and go fast, but there is no comparison in efficiency, comfort, or handling.

Maybe it's best to say that Richard Petty was the best driver of his day and that Jimmie Johnson is the best driver of today.
