Jumbo Squid washing up

"All over Orange County, jumbo-huge-gigantic monsters are washing up on the beach and fishermen are having a field day. Jeff Nguyen reports." This is exactly how a Dean Koontz story begins. Seriously, I can't shake the feeling that something immense is in flux that we are clueless about and that keeps me up some nights.
 
Calamarie! I love that stuff.....too darn bad some of those squids can be washing up down in the landlord's pond. My deep fryer would be going full steam for a few days.

I'm with Obio. Chop 'em up, dip 'em in tempura batter, dust 'em with panko crumbs, throw 'em in the oil. Munch a bunch! :icon_lol:
 
What are they. Humbolts squid? we get those buggers up here now (BC waters-global warming. Wooho! no more snow!) Big suckers, aggressive, smart. They appear to have a pretty sophisticated visual language- color change, bioluminescence, skin texture. Some biologists have ben calling them ' intellegent indiginous alien lifeforms ' for some years.
Neat story.

....The National Geo Channel/Discovery channels have done a couple of programs on the Humboldt squids. They appear to be reproducing in areas not seen before due to the warming of waters off of the West Coast and up through Canada.


.................I wish the Chicago Bears offensive front line could be as aggressive as the Humboldts are.........
 
These examples are really just average size for Humbolt Squid.
And yes, they are breeding and encroaching on territory as mentioned above.
Not an edible breed either, unless you enjoy 'rubber' Calamari ....................................:kilroy:

....Lawry's makes a wonderful 30 minute Mesquite Marinade. Soaking some Humboldt squid chunks in it would do wonders for that seafood appetizer.
 
Squid has to be cooked just right. Just enough to be done and it'll turn rubbery real easy if overcooked by just a minute or so.
 
"Jumbo Squid washing up"? Well, I suppose with all the tentacles they can get through a pile of platges pretty quickly AND dry them too! :kilroy:
 
Humboldts have been commercially fished for years. There's a steady market for them on the Med coast and Ireland, Russia, China, Japan, South East Asia and increasingly in North and South America.

Cooking (and taste) isn't much different then for other squid just compensate for the size; cut the meat into small strips instead of the more typical ring.
