Hi All

While I give my blood pressure a rest by taking a break from the RNAS traffic files I stumbled on this Forgotten ALPHASIM gem in the hanger!! does anybody know if its had an overhaul like alot of the other AS types? Anyway just for a bit of fun I knocked up a couple of repaints. the first is the First prototype VX158 and the second is a 'What-if' pre-production model in the colors of 232 OCU Painted in the post war black/grey Bomber Command scheme sported by the Lincoln & Canberra bombers of 1951/52. Just a bit of fun if anybody's interested I can post em up. & If anybody knows of an improved Flight Dynamics file for it that would be great too, coz at the moment The Sperrin really does handle like a Mountain!

P.s. for the eagle eye'd spotters out there the serial mistake on the fuselage has been corrected.

How well does that run in FS2004 Hooky, any compatibility issues?

I've just sent you a set of revised FDE's that were sent to me for Itosan's Sperrin, which should be just what you need - they were wip & I never received any follow up (as far as I can recall) but they should help.

well the only issue that i can see is that the wheels don't seem to spin but aside from that everything thing else seems OK, bomb doors open, control surfaces function, no open doors or holes so yeah I'd say its ok. just handles like an Asthmatic slug is all.

I'll look at adapting Itosan's FDE's to the AS model trouble is in past experience CoG's and datum points between the two are usually miles apart when I've tried to mesh AS and Itosan's creations and often certain features don't work properly but I'll experiment with it and see where i get many thanks Andy!

I'll have a play as well on the weekend, good practice for my C-27J revamp. You should have that email by now, those files should be waaaay better than either the Alphasim originals or Ito's own; it may just be a case of swapping out stuff like contact points etc.

Thanks Andy I'll give it a try

Dear Hooky is there a paint for the prototype Sperrin with the P on it?

Cheers

Casey

Hi Casey

As far as i Know there are No other repaints for the Sperrin which except the one I have cooked up which I'll grant you is Fictional but if you like I could try knock you one up if you'd like

Steve,

indeed. I had most of the relevant bases set up with Alpha sim Vulcans, Valiants and Victors as AI, decent amounts to. You can just make out the Victors in the background of the second pic. I had one Sperrin and one TSR2 doing the rounds aswell, plus some Cranberries (Ito's IIRC). Lost the whole lot when things went south. There is another Sperrin out there that might behave better as AI, Mike Stone or maybe Ito? If only AS would let us backwards engineer the OLD models we could turn them into some real nice AI. I always wanted to doit with the Victor and add extending drogues to the K2 for AI fuel tankers.

Shame the Sperrin never went into service, some what if paints would be nice. It might have made a nice Coastal Command aircraft or just a conventional bomber. Just because it wasn't up to snuff as a nuclear bomber doesn't mean it was useless, how many planes were adapted during WWII to other roles?

How many 'V-bombers' were adapted for other roles?

I'm working on a couple of 'what-if's' now as it happens I'll post the early 50's 232 OCU repaint above when I have a minute

That Sperrin link photo is fantastic. The Sperrin had such a futuristic design, with massive engine nacelles, it looks like something out of a Dan Dare comic. Love it, old jet designs had bags of character, so sadly lost with modern designs. Too bad indeed she didn't enter service, would have been a wicked bird to paint up.

Whilst still on the 'What -If' suggestions Just for a bit of Fun I Set up No.232 (Sperrin) Operational Conversion Unit at RAF Tinwald Downs. AI Sperrin look great from outside but only semi visible when viewed from the cockpit. Here's some screenies. I've adopted the Early 50's Black/Grey Bomber command scheme used by the Canberras and Lincolns from around that time.

Well, there were some interesting mods & proposals for the Vulcan towards the end of it's career; obviously there were the "Black Buck" Shrike missiles, but they also looked at putting Sidewinders on as an option (as they did with Nimrod at that time) - some sources say this was for self defence, but others say it was for dealing with the Argentine 707's which were conducting spying missions on the Task Force, as nothing else had the range to deal with them.

And there was also a proposal to use Vulcan as a stopgap due to the delays with Tornado ADV; a Vulcan with 10 Sea Dart missiles!!
