A couple of weeks ago I wanted to find a good free example which is not that far away and where there are some "kin" living. It is a true international airport though not that large. There is a beautiful payware example by islandsim I was drooling over until I saw that it was for MSFS. Phooey, double phooey!! Then I hunted online and discovered one for FSX at AVSIM which I downloaded and successfully converted the AFCAD in ADEx to P3D V4.5; converted all the necessary bgl's of the scenery to P3D V4 in MDCx and am able to use the FSX CVX and GP successfully again with no issues in Prepar3D V4.5 sim.
Now that I had accomplished that, I wrote to the designer Patrick Finch for permission to share it with my friend, Gray Eagle to test it which he generously gave to us. Gray Eagle not only tested it successfully but sent me a couple photos of the outside front of the terminal of the real airport which showed three flags and a pool with a fountain. Well, I had two of the three flags in SODE already: U.S. and South Carolina so all I need to do was figure out what the third flag WAS because it was not really clear in Google Earth. After searching a bit more, I found it clearly on their Facebook page. It was the Greenville Spartanburg Airport Flag. Fortunately I was able to find the logo online in a png; converted it to bmp and then created the necessary dds's for the third flag in SODE. The flags are placed inside a hedge enclosure that you will see in the photo below that I created in Sketchup and then a bgl of it in MDCx to place in ADEx. Then in Sketchup I created the fountain in the center of the pool in front of the three flags facing the road. Somewhere in the object bgl, Patrick had created the pool. The difficult part which was untimately accomplished by trial and error was getting it in the center. Looked really nice. Then, I found a video online that a passenger had taken of the fountain in motion. Could I do that, too? James Bond said "NEVER SAY NEVER!" so I didn't either. I Googled for help and found a post on FSDevelopers that described how it was done by tweaking an fx effect with FxEditor which fortunately I have used before. Now I had to remember how I placed effects in Model Converter X on top of obstructions last year so I could place the wter effect on top of the fountain static bgl and after trial and error you can see it in the video. The three flags are before the fountain was activated. The video shows the fountain in action. Both are included in the full airport package which will be in the Warbirds library since I got Patrick Finch's generous permission to share it. I say generous because with the exception of the flags and fountain and afcad conversion, all the rest is his hard work.
