KGSP Greenville Spartanburg Airport

A couple of weeks ago I wanted to find a good free example which is not that far away and where there are some "kin" living. It is a true international airport though not that large. There is a beautiful payware example by islandsim I was drooling over until I saw that it was for MSFS. Phooey, double phooey!! Then I hunted online and discovered one for FSX at AVSIM which I downloaded and successfully converted the AFCAD in ADEx to P3D V4.5; converted all the necessary bgl's of the scenery to P3D V4 in MDCx and am able to use the FSX CVX and GP successfully again with no issues in Prepar3D V4.5 sim.

Now that I had accomplished that, I wrote to the designer Patrick Finch for permission to share it with my friend, Gray Eagle to test it which he generously gave to us. Gray Eagle not only tested it successfully but sent me a couple photos of the outside front of the terminal of the real airport which showed three flags and a pool with a fountain. Well, I had two of the three flags in SODE already: U.S. and South Carolina so all I need to do was figure out what the third flag WAS because it was not really clear in Google Earth. After searching a bit more, I found it clearly on their Facebook page. It was the Greenville Spartanburg Airport Flag. Fortunately I was able to find the logo online in a png; converted it to bmp and then created the necessary dds's for the third flag in SODE. The flags are placed inside a hedge enclosure that you will see in the photo below that I created in Sketchup and then a bgl of it in MDCx to place in ADEx. Then in Sketchup I created the fountain in the center of the pool in front of the three flags facing the road. Somewhere in the object bgl, Patrick had created the pool. The difficult part which was untimately accomplished by trial and error was getting it in the center. Looked really nice. Then, I found a video online that a passenger had taken of the fountain in motion. Could I do that, too? James Bond said "NEVER SAY NEVER!" so I didn't either. I Googled for help and found a post on FSDevelopers that described how it was done by tweaking an fx effect with FxEditor which fortunately I have used before. Now I had to remember how I placed effects in Model Converter X on top of obstructions last year so I could place the wter effect on top of the fountain static bgl and after trial and error you can see it in the video. The three flags are before the fountain was activated. The video shows the fountain in action. Both are included in the full airport package which will be in the Warbirds library since I got Patrick Finch's generous permission to share it. I say generous because with the exception of the flags and fountain and afcad conversion, all the rest is his hard work.

Some reason I can't get the video of the fountain to work on here. Guess you'll just have to download the airport to check out how cool it works. I will be working on it all day to make sure everything is as good as it can get and then have Gray Eagle check out the complete package for the last time. Of course when you download and install it in your simulator, you can PM me if you have any issues. I don't every claim to be a perfect designer, far from it. I just try and use the talent the Good Lord gave me to share with others who have shared so much with me here and the other great download sites online.

The true airport was awarded the best small airport in North America.

Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (GSP) recently received a Southeast Region Recognition Award during the American Society of Landscape Architects’ Southeast Regional Conference for its air side garden.

Front of Airport

The landscaping work around this Airport is like what I have never seen.
Guess I chatted this airport up enough ;)

Here are a couple more teaser shots. Those with MSFS can get the Islandsim version that is utterly fantastic inside as well as out. If I wanted to attempt the terminal in Sketchup, I would need assistance of the architects like I had for the Columbus, GA airport terminal. I couldn't get a reply for their media department so this is it for now. I don't see that happening. Anyway, I think that Patrick did a fantastic job for free. All thirteen gates are there at the two terminals. The photos below show the static fountain and one I just shot of an American Eagle at Gate A1 waiting to depart to Washington-Dulles. You do not see the flags below because the wind is still and controlled by SODE they do not wave until there is a wind.

I have found flight plans for all the passenger and cargo flights which were shared over at flightsim.to for MSFS but I just tested one and it works in Prepar3D because they are .pln If anyone is interested, here is the link:

https://flightsim.to/file/10066/kgsp-greenville-spartanburg-real-passenger-and-cargo-routes

With them it would be possible using AIFP3 to create AI flights from KGSP to the destinations above. They are from 2021 I saw so if you want to be up to date, go to Flightsim.com and enter KGSP for today's flights and past ones.

I decided to make a couple more enhancements to KGSP so it will be probably next week before I upload it to the Warbirds Library. Stay tuned. I am also thinking of creating an AI Flightplan with all the airlines including the cargo ones. Frontier Airlines no longer flies to or from KGSP I was told by the airport management today. I called and asked because the 2021 pln files I found have them flying pairs but for the last couple of days, flightaware did not have any Frontier flights either during the day or at night.

I am investigating add the Airside Garden a highlight of the airport however there is considerable conflicting photo evidence so I am waiting to continue with the basic Sketchup so far. As soon as I get a definitive answer of what it actually looks like in 2024 as opposed to 2019 I will continue and finish it up.

I'd like to offer a caveat to any P3DV5 users out there that may be contemplating using this scenery that for the most part, it will do well except the waterfall animation as shown here. Again, a very nice scenery but waterfall effect is just not compatible with P3DV5.4 - I've been told by others that LM made changes to the way fx files function in P3D V5.4.

I've also noted that one scenery bgl that the Fountain-anim.BGL makes drawcalls on two files located in P3DV4.5 effects/texture folder. P3DV5.4 does not have those files. Notice files in outlined in red are located within P3DV4.5 folders .

I finished the Airside Garden scenery this morning and after tweaking the fountains in Fxeditor after adding them to the fountain heads (10) in Model Converter X, it was ready to add to the rest of the airport scenery in ADEx. Now it's been sent out for beta testing and I hope that next week it will be highlighted in the post and added to the Warbirds Library for download.KGSP Airside Garden 2.jpg

I just sent you an email with the fix. I had to Fxeditor the effects files and tweak them over and over until they looked like the real fountains, each time I had to save the effect; add it into the P3D effects folder; open it up and look at it because although the Fxeditor, thank you for it Arno is so great, the effect in the editor and in my computer were not exactly the same and while I did this, I had to experiment learning how to tweak the effects file parameters and watching what they did in the editor because the SDK was no help to me at all explaining how to do this. Anyway...I discovered why Gray Eagle doesn't have airside fountains because the bgl I sent had the next to last fx that I no longer was using so it had been deleted from the effects folder and only the final good one there. I just sent the replacement and hope that does it. This was hours of experimentation because it was a learning experience all the way! I sure hope that you didn't empty the Recycled Bin yet. This Airside Garden was created entirely from measurements and photos because unlike airports in the past, Greenville Spartanburg or their architects didn't bother to even return my calls or emails so NUTS! I didn't need ya. It may not be a perfect exact replica Like Islandsims for MSFS which really is a masterpiece, it's a lot better than the P3D default version by a long shot IMHO! And I huge thank you goes out to Patrick Finch who gave his permission to use, modify and share his work on it for FSX back in 2016 and Jim Dhaehens for sharing his lights.

Your fix worked!! Hooray!! Fortunately I did not empty my recycle bin.
When I was having issues with that air side water effect not working, I had binned it but and soon after you sent me a fix. So I restored all the files and subbed the replacement bgl and voila! The air side fountain effect does work in P3D V5.4 but some of the water spray has a sight silvery
distorted look. Not too bad for 5.4 use. Until someone can analyze why the fountain effects in P3D V5.4 look a bit off, I will use this scenery
in P3D 4.5. You done good Richard!!! Maybe some windsocks eh? ;)

One thing, I don't know why, but when I load this scenery up in P3D 4.5 (and with the fixed Bgl) I hear a sound effect
splashing in water. Like when you toss a bowling ball in a lake, kaa-sploosh!!

The kaploosh is part of the effect. It is a .wavfile because this IS a water splash effect that has been modified to be continuous not a one time effect. It is possible to edit it out if you think it is annoying. It is an FXedit of the effect to remove the wav file. Also, I am going to contact someone about the windsocks locations tomorrow. Wish me luck because KGSP staff are not the most cooperative people in the world by any means. I am going to take a different approach and call someone I had luck with at other airports when I told them what I wanted and what I do.

All the testing is over and the airport is ready to release to you all. I am adding it to the Warbirds Library in the Prepar3D V4.5 section.

For some reason which I don't understand, the airport bgl final version with default windsocks removed so that only one SODE windsock was present, did not replace the previous one with the default windsocks from Patrick Finch. Here for all those who want to download the airport from the library is the correct KGSP_ADEP4_RRL.bgl from August 14, 2024. Please copy, paste and replace the KGSP_ADEP4D_RRL.bgl one in the final version. Sorry to all. Thank you Gray Eagle for the email and catching it. Here is the mediafire link since the Attach files won't let me attach a bgl.

I noticed that you did not customize your jetways in GSX2 because your Gate B1 has Alaska Airlines logos on it. LOL! I didn't like getting the European Bank Logos on mine either so I did them all custom in GSX2 in my sim.

I did not know that you could nor how.

Sent you a PM with the manual pages to show how. It is much more realistic IMO to not have the jetways labeled with European or Asian stuff or Airlines that do not fly in and out of that particular airport. You can find almost all commercial airport websites that will tell you what airlines service them even seasonal. The manual that I created for KGSP which is included in the download tells what airlines service this airport and from what gates for regional or larger. The cargo airlines have their own ramp areas. You can download a package of the airport diagram and approach and departure charts from Flightaware.com up to date. If you just Google search you get out of date stuff I found the hard way with a conflict with online ATC in a flight a few years back with obsolete taxiways and closed runway. If you do any online flying at all it's important to have the most up to date airport scenery and this can be compared with the Airport Diagram Chart from Flightaware.com. KGSP's runway and taxiways including markings is up to date for August 2024.

Got it... Thank you.
