Originally a pilot trainer the Ki 54a entered the Army Air Service in 1941, its role was soon expanded to full crew training by the addition of four gun positions. (Variously turrets and open positions) In this role the Ki 54b served throughout the rest of the war. Over a thousand examples of all types were produced. Allied reporting name 'Hickory.'
