Lament of an MSFS Convert

FSX and P3D_V4.5 were my goto Sims for years. I had tons of airplanes and when I took a liking to a particular airport I built it, including custom buildings and hand placed vegetation and ground textures. When MSFS came along I found that my current puter wasn't quite up to the task. I loved the screenshots that were coming from MSFS but alas I was stuck with the "older sims". Eventually I found a great deal on Amazon and put together a very nice system that ran MSFS with all sliders maxed. Right away I found the learning curve a bit daunting, especially the controllers as Asobo introduced the inclusion of both keyboard and mouse assignments (preset) which meant that if I set my controllers for certain function to more mimic what I was used to I also had to search the presets for the keyboard and mouse to keep them from interfering with my setup. It took awhile to get that worked out.

The lack of freeware aircraft was something I knew about so I sucked it up and found a sparse few that fit my way of flying. What followed was the realization that the age old joy of tweaking the panels, textures, etc was out the window, especially for payware which can be encrypted, keeping any changes from being made. I know that there are ways to modify, but as far as being as simple as it had been for previous versions. . .definitely not.
I had also hoped to move some of my custom airports to MSFS however that now requires that I have a basic knowledge of Blender in order to import the work I did in Sketchup into Blender and then redo it to meet the requirements of Blender then re-texture using the new texture regimen and then export for use in MSFS which is also a totally different subject.

Anyway, after hoping to eventually get into MSFS 2020 and all the beautiful scenery and finally getting there I find that I fly very little (my average was at least a few hours each day if I wasn't building scenery) maybe twice a week for an hour or so. I do fly FSX and P3D the most.
2024 is not something I'll move to as the "new stuff" isn't of any interest to me and going by the videos and screenshots the ground textures and ambience of the Sim are more or less the same. So I would say that the anticipation of joining the MSFS world has, for me at least, been somewhat anticlimactic.

I agree 100% Ed. I have a computer capable of running it maybe almost maxed out but like you, I prefer to be able to use all the things that I created all these years and just because "blades of grass" are around the runway it's not enough to get me to part with the cost of 2020 and certainly what I have seen and heard, 2024. It was a blessing and boon for all of us still in FSX or in P3D V4 or V5 all the stuff that the payware developers have given us free. These days, I still fly but almost love repainting or creating in Sketchup to move over. Thank you Lockheed Martin for your 64bit technology and Prepar3D V4.5 which am I so loving. I CAN run that max'ed out with my computer and video card and am totally satisfied with the results. I guess when you get to our age, like I remember grandparents: Ah, the good ol' days" To me the good days are now with my P3D and all the great free stuff. Thank you to all the payware designers who shared and just didn't remove from the stores. Thank you too, to all those who are still creating for Prepar3D here at the Sim Outhouse. Merry Christmas to all, and to all a Good Night!

I hear ya Ed. And I partially agree. I dropped the legacy sims and moved over to MSFS2020. To say that it was painless would be lying. But now, I LOVE 2020.

Until now, 2024 has been a disappointment. But now, having three weeks off work, I will reinstall 2024 and will get to know it.

Personally, after 2020, the legacy sims seem cartoonish to me. I can't fly them anymore.

This is of course, just my humble opinion.

Cheers,

Priller

Same here, I own all my beloved aircraft (which aren't few...), and most of them are not made for MSFS so far.
Furthermore, we have the whole world on our computer, don't need any streaming (while hoping it works..). No dependence on anybody else to fly wherever you like to. That's the biggest advantage of P3D (or FSX as well...) in my opinion.
Yes, the incredible immersion, okay. The almost real appearance of the objects, this is really awesome. And yes, Priller, I share your sentiments regarding the unreal look of the legacy aircraft since MSFS came out.
But to me, it doesn't matter, the child within me changes P3D aircraft into real inside my head, same like decades of years before when playing with model planes from Airfix or Matchbox.

I am satisfied with P3D, but can understand all simmers for sure who jump over to the new MSFS world.

Ed, I have the same experience. I do most of my flying in P3D. I returned to a legacy sim. Why? I love to tinker with animations, adapt a plane from FSX to P3D, set deckpacks on carriers, make repaints. Without all that I would take up another hobby. (Which I have.)

I guess when you get to our age, like I remember grandparents: Ah, the good ol' days" To me the good days are now with my P3D and all the great free stuff.
The good ole days for me included the made Detroit classic cars of the 60's and 70's. I miss my '70 Dodge Swinger 225 Slant six, top Banana
with a black vinyl top and my red '67 Mustang. Now all cars look like (expensive) jelly beans. I like the looks of the Jeep Gladiator but
it is higher that a camels back (price). The Jeep does have character and it does look "Chunky". Sorry for non relevant comments, just had to
comment when I read about the Good old days. I know other things come to mind as well.

I did not make the jump to MSFS 2020 and from what I have read, I won't be going to 2024 either. Heck, I'm still using FSX: Steam Edition! If I switch, I'll likely go to P3D, but probably version 4.5 as that seems to have the most compatibility with FSX freeware add-on stuff.

Why have I not jumped to MSFS? When I sim fly, I usually want real-time weather, with seasons. I also like to keep the airports I use as up to date as I can, so that means modifying them with ADE. I also like being able to fairly easily modify aircraft liveries. There are also some freeware aircraft for FSX that I really enjoy. Then there is AI air traffic. I use Ultimate Traffic 2 for FSX and I have added AI aircraft and AI flight plans to flesh out the traffic at the airports I frequent. From what I understand, much of what I like about FSX would not be possible for me to do with MSFS.

Real time weather and seasons are possible now in 2024 from what I have seen/read. Modifying stuff has become a whole lot more time consuming, so much so, that I didn't make the jump either. Part of me wishes I had since I invested so much time in my last project for FSX/P3D V5.4 (V4 too) that the handful of sales wouldn't even cover a month let alone the 3 years. Just as well I liked the subject.

Sadly I feel that 2025 will probably be the last year my stuff is on sale, unless P3D V7 comes out with backwards compatibility and importantly is a contender for a better sim experience. MSFS and P3D are like comparing apples and oranges both made for different reasons.

While it all helps immersion, the focus on the ground and landscape seems to have dictated 2024.

For almost 30 years, I restored or custom built ship models. My partner had a favorite saying that fit so well. We started out with a hobby, that became a vocation. I have never chosen though for the main reason I like being retired and don't want a job again even if I AM the boss, chose to create a payware site. I like sharing my God-given talent with fellow flight simulation friends here on Sim Outhouse and from time to time have done a request or two scenery or repaint. When you are building for a living you have to create what the client wants the way they want it or not take the commission. Don't take the commission and don't pay the bills. All you who own your own company no matter what you do know what I am saying is true. Anyway, in a nice way, if asked to create or paint, because of all the time involved and I don't have any interest it it, I just decline. Likewise, if I want to do it and spend the time doing it, it IS nice to see downloads and interest. The reward though is in the creativity I think those of us who do it will agree payware OR freeware. Now, I'm through and will get off the "Soapbox" LOL!!!

Like a lot of the replies above, I am thoroughly happy with LM Prepar3D V4.5 because so much of the stuff I have created or downloaded works in it and REX gives me the real weather I like to fly in. Back in the day with FSX, I would virtually fly my iFly B737-800 for vitual Southwest Airlines from KORD to KSFO and then fly my EMB120 to KFAT and would amaze my Mom who lived in Fresno telling her it was raining, close the living room windows if it was nice out and she had them open before it got too hot in the summer. Back then in the 1980's I could stop and talk with the pilots on the way out and share knowledge of my EMB-120 and ask a few questions. Every once in a while one would ask me who I flew for and then I would explain FSX and they were impressed with the cockpit details. Like gray eagle said, "the good ol' days". Like MY '69 Mustang convertible which if I still had it mint could put a downpayment on a summer home. Let's not get started on all the baseball cards I tossed out cleaning out my room when I went in the Navy. It's always a case of hindsight, isn't it?
