Trying to figure out whats happening with my sisters laptop. It was dropped about waist height, the problem is that when some pressure is applied in certain parts the screen goes different colors. The laptop was taken in to be looked at but they couldn't figure out what was going on. Any help would be appreciated. Here is a shot of what happens to the screen.

Hey Airtj,

Is there any damage to the exterior of the laptop, on the chassis?

What type of laptop is it? How old is it?

I would say that the liquid crystal has probably been damaged but looking at the top right hand corner of the screen, you can see the mouse cursor and I doubt that would display if it was the liquid crystal.

Anybody have any ideas?

Their is some damage to the laptop, a piece is broken down by the keyboard area and a corner of the screen on the outside plastic. The laptop is about 1 year old, it's a laptop that is custom made by a Utah company called PC Laptops. They are really good about finding problems but that can't pin point whats going on with this one. This only happens once in a while. The only solution is to turn the computer off and then restart it.

Do you think that the hard drive can cause this?

What about a crack on the motherboard?

Hey Airtj,

I'm not an expert but have you opened the laptop and checked that the hard drive and RAM are seated correctly?

If you want to totally eliminate the screen from the problem, you could hook the laptop up to an external monitor. If the problem persists on the external monitor, then you'll know it's in the box, not the screen.

Do you think that the hard drive can cause this?

What about a crack on the motherboard?

I would imagine so but from what you've described, this sounds like an intermittent fault and if the hard drive was faulty or if the motherboard was cracked I'm sure it would persist every time you booted up the laptop?

I haven't opened the laptop up, don't wont to mess with it because of the warranty that it still has with the company that built it. All have to hook it up to an external monitor and see if it does it.

Thanks for the replies

It is very unlikely it is related to the hard drive, the motherboard is a prime suspect, as will as the cooling system. depending on the spec's unless it is a powerful system with dual GPU's the Video is built into the motherboard, if there is any damage to the board you could get the issue you are showing. My first instinct i s that it is possibly related to cooling specifically the Video section of the board, if the cooling fan is failing intermittantly the core temps will rise and that kind of display will happen. The fact that it is still showing the mouse pointer indicates it is not a full video card failure but rather a rendering problem, which are very oftenn caused by heat. I have seen this on several of the Dells at work, the last one had pluged fins in the main heat sink and the fan could not cool it properly, I cleaned out the heat sink and the thing works like new.

Heat can also cause slightly damaged traces to fail off and on when the temp expands various parts the ability of some traces to conduct signals can degrade so you might want to look into a utility to log the temp sensors on the system, if it is heat related you can check the logs for the temps the next time the screen goes nuts and if it is spiking that is you problem.

Is their a freeware program that I can download to check on the temps for the laptop? Is their a program that will save the information automatically?

Hi,

I'm not sure if Speccy will allow you to save the information to a text file

I read on their pages .......

Saving system information in a text file

You can save your current Speccy profile as a plain text (.TXT) file. This can be useful if you want a record in human-readable format.

To save the current Speccy profile in plain text:

1. In Speccy, click File and then click Save as Text file.
2. In the Save As dialog box, select a folder and change the file name if necessary.
3. Click Save.
