a buddy of mine ordered a laptop from dell. he asked me what i think of it and sent me the specs. i don't have any idea so i told him i'd ask someone who knows. he's not a gamer, he just does a little surfin, and forwards emails that he thinks are funny, stuff like that. the only thing i really could say is i see a bunch of stuff he'll never use (software) but otherwise can someone give me an opinion? i don't know what he paid.

Once someone's bought something that they can't return, I always send my blessing even if they bought the wrong thing at the wrong price.

I learned this lesson after years of being asked questions about car purchases since I was a manager at a car dealership right before I joined the USAF. Some people are smart enough to ask for my help beforehand. Most tell me they bought a car and ask if they got a good deal. They usually went around telling everyone what a great deal they got because they drove a hard bargain and got 500 dollars knocked off the price of a 35,000 dollar car. Everyone thinks they know about buying cars and they don't know squat. The dealerships see EVERYONE coming.

Getting back to the point, I would tell him he did great no matter what. People get all insulted when you tell them they got a raw deal. :ernae:

Cheezyflyer, your statement that it includes more software than he will likely use is very accurate, and the spec's are fairly high end for a general use laptop, however, it is likely to meet his needs for some time, and the difference in cost between the low end and high end today is small. The question of "is it a good deal" with computers is relative - IMHO, if the unit will do what the user needs and allow for growth, and the price was in the range the buyer wanted to spend I would tell him it was a good value. If he was looking for simple and minimal function, and was pressured into spending more than he had planed to spend it was not likely a good deal FOR HIM!

I have been involved in selling and supporting office equipment and computers for over 20 years, and I have seen just about every tactic and sham out there, as far as a NOB user buying a system, the major brands like Dell, HP, Gateway, Apple, (no specific order to that list) they all offer good value, and some measure of after the sale support (mileage may vary) so it is likely a safe bet to tell him it was a good buy.

Looking strictly at the list and spec's you provided, it is a high end machine and around here something like it would retail at more than $1,500.00

I hope that isn't 1500 dollars. My Thinkpad T510 cost 1100 and it has higher specs.

Not to mention the quality difference between Thinkpads and anything Dell makes...
