LCD Monitor discussion

Charter Member
With the latest CFS2 enhancements in mind, i'm thinking of replacing my dear old (but good) CRT screen with a larger LCD flat monitor. I am thinking of a 20-22 incher. Today the wide screen format is beginning to be the standard. But how is this with CFS2? I guess you cant set up the game in this format? You still have the old game screen formats? or..

I would like to hear some related experiences with LDC monitors+CFS2.

Hi Morton, the only issue I have seen with a wide screen LCD is that the 2D panels are stretched to the width of the display. All other views are ok. Also with the higher resolutions your graphics card will be working a little harder. Might loose some FPS. That is my experience. One more thing. Check if the panel will adjust up/down and also tilt. Not all of them have these options.

No problem

I run CFS2 on a Widescreen at 1440x900 and everything looks alright to me. Maybe I am just used to the "stretching" because if it does it I don't notice at all. I have a 1G Video Card and tons of memory so I have no trouble with frame rates in CFS2.

:applause:

Just to throw in my two bits worth on widescreens.....when I changed from CRT to LCD a few months ago, HannsG had come out with a 28 inch one that that has a 1900 X 1200 native resolution with a digital HDMI input. The price is great, too. I got one for just under $500 and they are now sold for under $400. Mine is still performing great and my wife has since acquired one. In the US, Costco and Newegg carry them.

I.ve just started using a 24 inch flat screen, and CFS2 never looked better Picked mine up for £130 from Novatech here in the UK.

Check to see if your video card can output DvI (most do), if so, your next monitor may/should handle this configuration
Then it should have a Dvi-D double ended 24 pin cable, and your video will pop your eyes! With CAD level abilities!!

i have a 22 inch samsung and its great with anything, movies etc.no distortions stretching etc with cfs2,i run resolutions over 1280xetc
2000rams and lots of memory, video nvidia8500gt i think talking monitor without the rest is not enough,

I got an Acer 1916 "19 inch" a couple of years ago. I forgot the terminology for the speed (not refresh rate that's different) but it was 002 or 005 or something like that. Anyway I run it at 1280 X1024 (not exactly wide screen) but it is really fine. It's much better than my old 19" CRT

Don't forget the warranty..try to get the best possible, even if it means spending a little extra.

Multi-monitor setup in cfs2 is possible, but only for 1 mission. Every mission you fly requires you to setup all the screens at the start everytime.
We did have a thread on multi-monitor but it got lost in the last SOH crash.

Done! Bought a Samsung 22 incher. My Videocard is the GeForce 6600. CFS2 looks just great. Framerate dropped however with the new 1680 x 1050 resolution. But I found i could disable the CFS2 HW setup, mapping and filtering, without any visual change.
Maybe i should upgrade to the latest video card....?

I have this problem of disable HW setup, with the old voodoo 4500 of 32mb ram!, I sink that this problems is for incompatibility, try with upgrade the soft of your videocard

One more question- Going from 1024x724 to 1680x1500 with the new monitor made CFS2 looks more specular, but dropped my framerates considerably:

Typically
2D view :from 40 to 20
External view: from 80 to 40

Is this something SOH members also have experienced? My PC is 3,3 GHz/ 2G Ram, videocard geforce 6600. Think switching to the latest Videocard will improve this? Or is the only solution the latest type PC/prosessor with tons of ram?

Mort

Hey Morton! I just got a Samsung 2233BW for an early BDay Gift. I love it. As others have said the 3D panel's gauges are stretched a tad, but not too bad. Everything else looks fine though.

Here's an over view of my system and the performance I get. I used the DBolt improved F4U-1A Corsair and Wake as the base for the perfromance tests.

My system is as follows

CPU: C2D E8400 @ 3.0GHZ
RAM: 4GB of GSkill DDR2 1066 Memory 2x2GB sticks
MoBo: Gigabyte GA-p35-DS3R
Video Card: Evga 8800GTS 512mb PCI-E
OS: Windows XPpro SP3 32bit
Monitor: Samsung 2233BW 22'' LCD widescreen

Game video settings:

Trilinear on
Mip mapping on
Anti-Aliasing on
1680X1050x32

Under graphics setting all bars are set to full right and all boxes are checked except Max Visability is set for 45miles (why have it any farther?) and LOD Target Frame Rate set for 35. (I have no idea what this does really)

Video card Settings:

AF set to 16X
AA set to 8xQ
AA transparency set to Multisampling
VSync is off

Performancedata:

On Ground
VC mode no Zoom out with engine off - 260-272 FPS
Outside view no zoom out with engine off - 250-260 FPS
2D panel - 85 FPS

In Air
VC mode no zoom out - 300-430 FPS
Outside view no zoom looking back at Wake - 247-340FPS
2D panel- 138FPS

*note
FPS values range considerably depending on what is view. When viewing empty ocean and sky frame rate goes up, and the rate drops when looking at more detailed scenery or objects. Frame rate also fluxes due to aircraft being flown.

These values stated above are of actual current performance using my current system and the 22" monitor.

Aquamark 3 score: 167540 (roughly translates in to 167.54 FPS in the AM3 test)

Morton:

It has been my experience that the CPU power really adds to CFS2's performance. But with that in mind playing at higher resolutions will also require more power from the videocard. System memory or RAM adds to performance stability. The 6600 was (and still is) an amazing card. But it does not have the raw power necessary to run high perfromance applications (Which flight simulators are one) at high resolutions or high video card settings. It is cirppled by it's 128bit memory bus and the lack of memory.

When I got this system, complete with a 17 inch LCD panel, I found that frame rates maxed out at 77FPS, even though the system has the capabilities of running it much faster. Then someone mentioned running CFS2 in Windowed mode....once I switched to Windowed mode, frame rates jumped through the roof....as has as 300FPS with some planes, average is around the 160FPS mark.

Wulf190, what you say and those FPS figures of yours tell me what i really knew all along. Prosessor and RAM is the key word. However, I think i will start with a new videocard. One of my daughters may have my current 6600 card. She needs an upgrade for those SIMS games..
The PC will have to wait a little.

Interesting, Obio.. Windowed mode you say, more specific please?

Mort

What OBIO is referring to morton...with CFS2 running, a plane in flight...hit the Alt key, upper left of screen, options, click fullscreen. This will put the sim in a MS window. To go back to full screen...same process.
