First let me say I know I'm running on the low ragged edge of computer power for P3, but I've found that I can significantly increase my frame rates by changing location. Currently my pilot flying for Esc 3 is enjoying frame rate into the 50's (sliders on two except for aircraft 5 and clouds 1) with the worst dips into the low 30's. My german pilot flying for Jasta 5 is getting mid 30's at best and dipping to the low teens. Funny thing is the scenery near Esc 3 has lots of trees and towns and buildings and near Jasta 5 is more open farmland with much fewer trees and buildings.

Airfields, airfields, airfields. You've probably got fewer and more sparsely situated airfields in Esc 3. If you're in Flanders in Jasta 5, that area usually has 4 or 5 airfields grouped together and sometimes 8 or more in sight at one time.

That could be it, thanks I'll check it out.

Something that's puzzling me...while flying over a very big town (Amiens) I was getting 40+fps. One look at a single airfield and I'm down to 18fps. How can that be?

Same thing near the front, one look at a barrage in the far distance and I'm down to 14fps. Look away and I'm up to 80+.

After watching my mission review I did notice that I'd been looking towards where a big dogfight had been going on, about 15 miles away and hidden by driving snow and clouds. I was getting around 12fps at that point.

This is pretty much the only thing that's putting a damper on play, these huge fps swings. I can't understand how hundreds of town buildings have little effect while airfields slaughter the frame-rates.

It's something that has been with us always, but now it's been lessened. Airfields Murder FPS . . FACT OF LIFE

Write a letter to Winding Man I'm sure he can provide a satifactory answer, and if he gives you the standard SAS answer of:

"I can tell you, but then I'd have to kill you"

Giv'em the secret handshake :kilroy:

Yes, but why.

Siggi,

I don't know for sure but I'd assume it has to do with the parked aircraft on the field. I'm sure those are fully rendered models and so a lot of polys. Additionally they are in a relatively small area so looking at that area is going to send your GPU into overtime rendering them all, plus what ever it's doing to render your aircraft, the ones in your flight and any E/A in the area.

Hmm. If that's the case it's a lot of overhead for stuff that's just there to decorate an airfield, most of which is seen close-up for only a few seconds at each end of a mission. I'm sure props could be used to almost as good effect in place of full 3D models.

Maybe a dev could confirm if this is the reason, in which case I'd like to suggest a switchable option...props vs 3D models for airfields. I'm hitting 12fps for extended periods of time quite frequently, and that's with terrain and scenery already on 3. Clouds on 2. I have a respectable rig (Q6600 @ 3.2ghz, 2gb PC8500 RAM and an 8800GTX) and everywhere else in the game my fps is flying (har har).

The game does seem to handle low fps very well, it remains fluid even down to as low as 20fps, something not many other games can boast, but at 12fps things become very rough.

Not just airplanes, but tanks, trucks, infantry, machine guns, aa guns, etc. A lot of overhead on the airfields and some of it a bit over the top IMO such as tanks at almost every allied airbase. And Siggi's right, detail that might only be relevant at specific times i.e. take off, landing (worst time to have FPS bog down) and airfield attack.

I don't know if it's the Devs plan is to try and incorporate the fix for every problem before releasing the patch but this problem with the AI just stooging around in circles 1000' above the ground is really starting to get annoying.
It seems it's worse in the late war years. I just finished flying two flights where after climbing to 12,000' the E/A I find are chasing there own tails at 1000'. Even worse after diving down to engage they won't break out of there circling even when attacked.
On the last flight after I dove on three DVIIs going round and round we were bounced by another flight of of five DVIIs I thought great at least some planes that will fight even though I'm low and slow. But after the intital merge and break guess what? Yep everyone of them started the chase the tail routine.
Funny thing is this only happens when I fly the mission myself. If I use warp I find myself 3000' below a flight of 7 DVIIs that don't hesitate to bounce and fight.

Please Please Please. If the fix for this is ready release it and fix the rest later

In Phase 2 it was proven that as you maxed out your sliders, the sneakyness of the AI improved. Alas the study was never conducted as to the quality of the AI, when you lowered your sliders to trouble shooting level ( which is where you are )

Might slighty more computer power solve your problem

I don't think a patch is needed, while a different computer surely is :kilroy:

After my last mission I'm thinking it might be the AI handling combats that's the problem. At 5000ft I can look at an airfield and see no FPS hit (I've limited FPS to 30 in a config file per Winder's suggestion). However, after watching the flight review I've roughly tallied 12fps-moments with combats that were taking place elsewhere on the front.

I have a Q6600 running at 3.2ghz. Should action in the game, multiple dogfights at various locations, be hitting it so hard, or is it a coincidence and it's objects that are hitting the GPU, even though they're far away and out of sight?

My Quad is not O.C. I'm running the stock 2.4

But I will gladly sacrifice the numbers of FPS for having higher sliders

Most times I'm in the 20's, I've even seen an 11 once at take-off

I can run at 50 FPS, but the AI are total idiots

Sooo like the Barker at the Carnival Shouted:

"You pays your money, you takes your choice" :kilroy:

This is caused by the CFS3 Loiter command which has the AI loitering and doing damn little else - not quite the alert flyers anymore in this mode - they simply fly hell bent on only yep..... 'loitering' .
This issue forms part of the AI Navigation fixes already implemented in V1.2..

In lower powered craft they will sometimes Loiter and slowly descend until they crash..... again this additional Loiter procedure is also superfluous to our requirement and is also fixed in V1.2

Progress update: 04/02/09

1) AI issues when player is not lead and AI Circling/Crash issue:

Issue:
AI issues when player is not lead and circling and crashing of AI in low powered craft - we will soon be testing the fix to this..
Temporary Workarounds:
Enlist and always play with the highest Rank
Users can elect to always lead by setting the Always Lead in the Player Flight Position setting in workshops.
Progress:
Fix implemented in V1.2 - final testing in progress

Hey Winder: I ain't the guy with the problem, I ain't whinning about anything. It's our friend from the Pacific NW, the guy who plays on the out of date computer, and desires HIS patch prior to anything else.
Me, Me, Me that's all the Liberals ever say. (RANT OVER)

After GimpyGuy's unnecessary rant, claiming (wrongly) someone was asking for a "patch" before his priority issues, the FPS problem noted likely regarding current SCENERY items is still relevant and deserves some attention, IMHO. The claims of "Always has Been This Way" are not productive responses, as there is potentially a resolvable issue in the future-- or not, dependent upon Winder and the other developers' feedback. I can specifically say my FPS changes dramatically by moving the SCENERY slider but I'm not willing to get all-the-time tremendous FPS by setting my Slider to a 1. I'd like to know if there is a possible solution in the offing in some future patch (the priority of this fix certainly not to be determined by ME).

I think a specific response and the potential resolvability of this issue would be appropriate, particularly for those of us that don't have the several years' institutional knowledge of prior threads that "crashed and burned" and particularly since there are numerous threads on this board regarding FPS issues for a variety of reasons. To me, clearly improving frame rates through whatever reasonable means as much as practical should be considered important. Let's be frank, if this were not a private developer product with the obvious love and attention given, and it were put out by one of the "bigger" publishers, there would be hundreds of people going flaming-nutso on the Boards over the game's frame rates whether it be related to ATI GPU products, rendering engines, non-optimized code to be improved in the future, etc.

Not sure who you are addressing but current issues being looked into are detailed in the sticky post above.

ATI issues are not on the list yet as we still have not bought an ATI Card but there are many posts here that indicate good FPS is possible on ATI too once setup....do some searches.

The purchase and evalution of an ATI card may result in a set of configurations in the workshops for ATI in the a patch post 1.2 or 1.3 but I cannot say right now.

There is no intention in the short term to do more optimisations for the Nvida cards though.

Why dont you start a Poll so we can see how ATI users fare? - I will do it now....

Those are not my words my friend, it was the whinning of someone else

But as to the airfield situation it was a LOT WORSE in Phase 1, it was somewhat better in Phase 2, and it still exists today

So I think I can safely say two things:
1) they know of the situation
2) Don't Hold your breath waiting for a solution

Scenery slider eh? Somebody please enlighten me, what's the difference between "scenery" and "terrain"? I'm going to have a stab in the dark and guess "terrain" is the rez of the tiles, and "scenery" is the objects on it?

First of all Gimpy you posted in the wrong thread. I guess bitterness and senility have combined to keep you confused about where you are or what your talking about. This thread is about what causes fps issues in curtain areas and has nothing to do with AI response. In the thread http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/showthread.php?t=10096
I asked about releasing a fix for what "I" think is the most pressing problem of the sim to date. While all the problems reported by users require addressing I think a lot of them are minor "glitches" that can be fixed as time allows. I don't know why you seem to have to be such a mean, hateful and nasty person virtually every time you respond to a post. From the first day I joined this board I haven't seen you respond to anyone with anything other than sarcasm and vitriol. On the odd occasion you have tried to be helpful, your advise has either been outdated or just wrong. Please feel free to keep your thoughts on the threads I start to yourself.

Thank you,
Scott
