Lockheed Air Express

Ever since NCgent first posted screen shots of his Lockheed Air Express, I have been drooling over that plane. I had planned on buying it this month, but with the SOH and AVSim servers going down and funds being needed to get both sites back to full operating capacity, I opted to forgo the plane and my new sneakers this month and chip in what I could to help both sites. I told my wife that I would get new shoes and the plane next month...but she told me that I NEED new shoes (just because they are horribly dirty, horribly smelly and the fact that the ferrets love shredding the insoles when I have those fuzz butts out to play does not mean that I NEED new shoes...they are just getting comfortable) and that I deserve a new plane. And besides, she said, what difference will 7 bucks make in our budget. So, a little while ago, I went to Razbam.org and purchased the Air Express....and boy oh boy am I glad I did.

I have downloaded and installed all the free ware aircraft that NCgent has done and like it...especially the Fairchild F-91...simply love that plane. The quality of those planes is decent...but let me tell you, the quality of the Air Express is far beyond what I have seen in his free ware work. His modeling skills have greatly improved! The plane is a drop dead looker inside and out. While the VC may not have all the bells and whistles of the big block payware planes, it is nice, highly functional, and offers a great view of the world around you....which is all that I really look for in a VC. I don't need animated switches, switches that click when I mouse them, 3D gauges that are back light and reflective....all those things are nice, but I can live without them quite happily.

Flying the Air Express around Aruba, I found the plane to be a nice flying aircraft. I really enjoyed that 20 minute cruise.

The two skins that the plane come with a very attractive and well done. I have done some Googling and found historic pics of 3, 4 maybe 5 other actual factual Air Expresses that I will be doing skins of. And a number of other profiles, most likely totally fictional, depicted on RC and die-cast renditions of the Air Express....fictional or not, those too are going to be done.

If you are looking to add a nice payware aircraft, one that is a bit out of the ordinary and that captures a piece of aviation history, I highly recommend plunking down the $7 for this plane. It can be found on Razbam.org. It is listed under TopFlightSimulation. I know Ron will appreciate the traffic to his site (especially if you pick up some Razbam packages...which are nicely priced) and I know that NCgent will appreciate the extra padding in his otherwise hungry wallet. He makes these planes to augment his disability income. $7....that is nothing more than one missed trip to a fast food burger joint.

Thanks for the HU!! Always wanted this Lockheed Air Express - purchased it. Great fun to fly!! Thanks Obio.

Bought it the first day it came out. Other from changing the fuel tanks to standard 50-gallon wing tanks I've done nothing else to it and it flies great.
Looking forward to your repaints OBIO. :ernae:

how did you change the fuel tanks??

Make a back up copy of the aircraft.cfg file. Then open the aircraft.cfg and look for this section:

[fuel]

//Longitudinal (feet), Lateral (feet), Vertical (feet), Usable(gallons), Unusable (gallons)

fuel_type = 1
number_of_tank_selectors = 1
electric_pump = 0

Center1 = -6.2, 0, 2.7, 48, 0
Center2 = -7.9, 0, -2, 280, 0
Center3 = -7.9, 0, -2, 130, 0
LeftMain = -6.2, -4.2, 2.7, 96, 0
RightMain = -6.2, 4.2, 2.7, 96, 0

LeftMain and RightMain are the wing tanks. Change the 96 to 50 in each line and you are set.

I also deleted the center tank entries as well. If you're not comfortable with that you can always put '//' in front of those lines. Most Air Expresses didn't have that much fuel capacity.
In fact the Texaco 5 flown by Frank Hawks had the standard fuel tanks augmented by dozens of 5-gallon gas cans in the passenger cabin. There was a guy in there, Oscar Grubb, who had the dubious honor of hand pumping the contents of those cans into the wing tanks; after pumping the contents dry he would cut the cans up with some tin snips and make more room inside. At some point he ended up passing out from the fumes and the plane ran out of gas somewhere just east of the Appalachians at altitude. It took some yelling from Hawks to get Grubb back up and pumping again but they made it across the country in record time anyway. Grubb would later say about the flight 'Never again...not even for a million dollars!'
