LOD8 mesh for CFS2

Hi all.

I've uploaded a set of LOD8 mesh for use with CFS2 and the new watermasks I made. It should eliminate the need for most flattens, and add some more definition to the Pacific and European theatres. It is 22 large zips containing 97 mesh files, that cover the European and Pacific theatres of WWII.

Dick

I would use it with the LOD7 mesh, if at all. LOD7 mesh covers the whole world, and this set is specific to the European and Pacific theatres, and is trimmed at the coasts to reduce the need for flattens when used with the new watermasking.

Dick

They could go into the same folder, and used by multiple installs of CFS2. You could delete corresponding LOD7 files, but that would be too much work for me. The LOD8 files are 1/4 of the "CST" file area, and are named in a similar manner.

CFS2 loads mesh "on the fly" and uses what it needs at the LOD it needs. Supposedly, the LOD8 mesh will superceed the LOD7 mesh at a given distance. The distance has never been revealed by Microsoft, but there was some testing done concerning it a few years ago by Steve Greenwood, and others. I don't remember the particulars, but I do remember that LOD11 mesh doesn't pop into view until you are quite close... not a real benefit for a combat sim.

Me thinks it is almost time for a whole new tutorial as I am starting to feel that I am on a old french highway without a roadmap! ( no slight intended but having driven some of the old roads of France they can be a nightmare to navigate at night!)

Fibber,

The other three are in the uploaded queue. Douglas will download them tomorrow.

A tutorial would be great, as putting in mesh and stuff is my primary weakness... I'd love to improve it, but I ain't got the slightest idea...

Once I figure it out, (I'm close) I can throw a .pdf and .doc together.

A big Thankyou

Really looking forward to this;

last week I flew up the Seine from LeHavre to Paris in Lod 7; It was spectacular!

Hi Dick
Thanks a hugely massive amount for this. You deserve one of these :medals: and you probably need several of these :icon29:.

I am in the midst of downloading these now. Just one question and possibly the smallest little request. How far does the European theatre go? Would it perchance cover the Mediterranean and Balkan theatre? If not would it be a lot of work to do?

Thanks
Gavin

The European covers east beyond the Caspian sea, west beyond the Azores, north to the pole ( not modeled ) and south well into the Sahara.

I didn't model the icepack because it changes according to the season, and might better be modeled in smaller regional ( LOD5-sized ) scenery if someone wishes to do this.

Massive Applause

I'd like to echo Gavin's atta boy !

Good Work, Dick ~ Your efforts are greatly appreciated !!!

Thank You

So, if I read this right...the LOD8 is not a world covering mesh? PTO and ETO only?
