Looking For a Helicopter

Actually just looking for a Sikorsky H-34 Choctaw. Is there a decent one out there?

I can only think of the Wessex by Simshed for FS9 as alternative to the one Klaus mentioned. Not the same I know, but almost.

"decent" is the key word here Willy, lol. I found one on flightsim.com by Paul Bradshaw that has a decent exterior model, but the VC is a quandary. The panel config file has a VC section and viewing it in FSPanel Studio, it uses the gauges from the Bell_206 but nothing is visible in the Sim. If I could figure out why, it might not be a bad Heli. . .might need some work, but the price would be right.

Works out of the box pretty well in FSX, with a useable vc, i prefer this to the Bradshaw model, im also using some SEA repaints by our own SOH member Hooky722 which also work well,

cheers ian

I've been flying the ex payware AlphaSim S-55, but decided to try to branch out to other helis. The S-58 just seems like a logical next step. I've got a few others that I can take off and fly but landings are very iffy.

Ed, I've been going through the files on the Bradshaw one which is what possessed me to ask about others.

Ian, thanks, I'm going to have to give that one a try! Belgian out of Koksijde? I've been there a few times.

There is a VC of sorts, but it's non-functional.

Purchased Dirk's CH-34 from Simmarket. Not overly excited about it, but it fills the bill and I'll tweak it a bit and be satisfied.

I can usually land within a half mile of where I'm heading to.

I can usually crash right where I'm trying to land. Seems like walking a half mile after landing might be better.

Falcon409, what do you mean by "tweak it a bit"? I would be interested as I am also "not overly excited" ...

I also tried different versions, but put them aside for various reasons, some of them mentioned afore.

I secretly wish for a long time that Milviz, Nemeth or another payware dev would pick up the H-34 / S-58. That helo is a real classic.

Cheers,
Mark

Several things actually, like the rotor blur (main and tail) to me looks very unrealistic. . .I may try one of Banana Bob's to see if it works, the sound. . . .there is no change in RPM sound between idle and being fully airborne. . .the tail wheel doesn't sit on the ground. . .it looks to be about 6-8" above the ground. Those are the main ones.

If anyone has this Helicopter and can speak to the problems I mentioned above, I'd be grateful. After some research, it appears the sound was a problem when it was release 4 yrs ago, so it doesn't look like that will be corrected which is a big problem. The sound files for the increase in RPM are there and referenced in the sound.cfg file but they are "inop" for whatever reason. The panel.cfg file references a gauge "UH-34!" which is nowhere to be found, so several of the gauges don't work (GPS, Hover, Tools, Com Radios and so on). I tried a reinstall to a folder on my desktop and turned off Anti-Virus thinking it might have had an effect but it didn't help.

The author conveniently left out any e-mail or other contact information so there's no way to get to him as far as I have been able to find thus far. So "nschley", there is actually quite a bit that will have to be fixed. Knowing what I know now. . .I would steer clear of this model as the author doesn't appear to have any intention of fixing what ails it.

Ed, you could use the sounds from the old AlphaSim H-55 (or alias to it). They're both piston engined (I think they used the same engine).

Sounds like the contact points could use a little tweaking with that tail wheel.

Downloaded the FSX version, but the sounds for that are (unbelievably) aliased to the Robinson R-22, lol

Oops! Let me see what I'm using!

radial_helicopter_sound.zip from Flight Sim.

Rgr that. Actually the other thing I noticed is that even after trying another helicopters sound file, it made no difference in the RPM sounds despite those being part of the sound file. Possibly something related to the mdl file?

I'll get the one you mention and see what happens. I was able to replace the missing GPS with a GNS530 that I already had so that's working at least.

Got it Willy. I think there's something quirky with the model coding, although I don't see how it would affect sound, but then again. . .what do I know, lol. Even with this sound file, which is great, I still have only one RPM "sound" that follows the entire range of throttle settings, luckily it's full RPM. . .I can live with that. There is an idle sound. . .deep, throaty sound, but it remains over the full RPM sound unless I hit the "Q" key, at which point it goes away (changing views brings it back. . . .sometimes). Got the tail wheel to sit correctly so that's one more thing to check of the list.
